I have done this to my sister and BIL and kids!!  I went to drop something off...they were having dinner and I stayed for a bit, and chatted while they ate!

see that's the thing - i don't know!!
we just moved so i *think* this is only their third visit
they never came to see us at our old apartment and before that, we lived with them.
i hope this isn't something they plan on making a habit...

My parents do it all the time. I guess now I am just used to it.
But you are not odd for feeling that way.
LOL my dad came over why we were eating one night. Sat on the couch next to the kitchen and got on my laptop. Dh and I were eating and next thing you here is my dad farting. Needless to say we both lost our appetite.

I've definitely done this with my mom--we are super comfortable around each other and I nap over her place while visiting, etc.
It all just depends on what's normal for you.

I can see how that could be wierd for some. Unfortunately for my family - like if my sister came over with her hubby that would be normal or I would do it at her house. So I guess it depends on the relationship. KWIM - I know how it feels to not want to entertain ppl when you werent expecting it.
On another note, you guys eat fast, im going by the time you ate dinner to sutting with them and then when they left. I thought me and DH were the only ones who scarfed down our food

Maybe they were hoping for an invitation to eat?
I have had friends/family stop by at meal time. I usually offer to 'thin the soup'. I have delayed our meal when they say no and then stick around because it feels so strange to eat 'in front' of people.

My parents always "drop by" just as we sit to eat dinner.
It's so annoying because then my kids don't want to eat, they want to play with their grandparents.
And my mom always has to go sniffin around my food to see what I made and how I made it.
ANd wouldn't you know, they ALWAYS stop by on crappy dinner night. (Hotdogs, mac n cheese, etc...). NEVER when I make a nice meal. 
People are weird...I'm just convinced.

Nah--not weird to me. But my family is like that with each other. We drop by and hang just to hang. My brother has done this a bunch of times---and we've done it to him when he had his own place.
Just drop by--if they were eating dinner...go ahead and eat...we'll chill and watch a movie when you're done.
Maybe this is one of those family differences -- like his family is the 'drop by' kind--and you're used to the 'formal invite/occasion"

ahhh see... it isn't WEIRD to me b/c my family will do that (if we lived in the same area that is...)
but if they never did it and then suddenly did do it... then yes-- it is weird.
