Is it normal for your toddler to...

Not say when they need to go potty. We've been potty training for a month and it looked like he was starting to say when he had to do pee pee. Now he's stopped and i'm back to taking him every 2-4 hours (depending on his fluid intake) Is this normal? Are there kids out there that don't say when they have to go potty? I am constantly reminding him that he can always tell me when he needs to go potty and when I ask him if he will tell me he always says yes but then never does.

And at school he never goes. When I pick him up I take him to the potty...The teacher said that she's had students that are there full day and they've held it in for 8 and even 10 hours...Chat Icon

I'm getting so frustrated....

Yes, my son only tells me sometimes, and never if he is wearing a pull-up.

Re: Is it normal for your toddler to...

Matthew went through stages where we thought he was potty trained and didnt tell us and was going in his pull-up.

But now he tells me when he has to go. he is in underwear, and a pull up at night. I just think he wasnt ready yet.
My mom always told me before she passed away, to NEVER push them or get really upset when they have an accident, I went with that and he is doing good (Knock on wood)

Well I am thankful (knock on wood) that there haven't been any big accidents. Sometimes I check his underwear and there will be a little spot of wet, when I notice that I quickly take him.

He refuses to go at school. The teacher takes him but he sits and does nothing. He waits for when I come pick him up. Earlier this week the teacher took them to the playground, now he had gone to the bathroom 2 hours before he went to school. When I dropped him off I took him to the potty, he did nothing. Now add the 2 hours before he went to school and the 3 hours that he was there and that makes 5 hours that he did not go. But the teacher said that before she left for the playground she put a pull up over his underwear and when they came back she took the pull up off and he was still dry. When I went to pick him up I took him to the potty and he went.

But his teacher has told me that she's had some full day kids that have held it in for 8 or even 10 hours cuz they didn't want to go in school.

My fear is that if he is still like this by september that they won't let him go to pre-k. But then again one of my friends told me that when her son was in pre-k he would do what my son did. He would hold it in and wait until his mom came to pick him up...

Is he in undwear all the time? If so, then I would just leave him be, and let him go when he has to go. I was very surprised when my kids were potty training that they didn't need to go all the time. They could go hours and be perfectly fine. I always let them control the situation and they were trained in no time.

Yeah he's mostly in underwears...I put pull ups on at night or if we go on the bus, train or long car rides.......

I do leave him in his underwears a lot when we are home, but the thing is that I see he has to go and he chooses to hold it in and not tell me...

Is he wetting his pull-ups at all when you do put them on him? If so, that could be sending mixed signals... Maybe he is waiting for the pull-up... ?? IS he waking up really wet? Maybe ditch pull-ups for good, in any situation. How old is he now? You mention pre-school next year, same as my DD, so I assume 4?

No he doesn't wet the pull ups. Sometimes he wakes up dry but most of the time he wakes up wet in the pull up.

What gets me is that he was starting to say when he felt pee pee and we would go to the potty and now I just don't understand why he's stopped and just chooses to hold it in...
