is it normal to soak through a diaper this badly at 5 days old?
so DS actually slept in his crib last night!!! he's 5 days old. the first 2 nights he was home he screamed hysterically...we tried a few different things and it seemed to work.
but....when i picked him up, he had peed and pooped right through his diaper onto his bed! we had last changed him at like 2am and it was 6 am when i took him out. he's in pampers newborn (don't know which one--got them from the hospital). they're definitely not too small.
it didn't come out of the diaper, it came THROUGH the diaper--front and back. is that normal? thanks so much!

my kid is 2.5 and wears a huggies overnight... i bought a size 4 diaper by accident, she's really a size 5. she pees through her diaper about every night.
it's probably a wrong size diaper.

DS had full diapers as a NB and he was changed once during the night. So I think he would have gone through the diaper too if I had not changed him after his feedings at night.

see that's the weird thing--we change him either before or after each feeding (depending on if he's screaming for food or not). he ate at 10pm and 2am so he had been changed then.
is it possible that they are too small even though they're physically big on him? he's 6 pounds 9 ounces right now and a little peanut. i have size ones but i feel like he swims in them and i'd be worried about the poo coming out the sides.
thanks for the replies so far!

That is awesome that he slept in the crib!!!
Definitely don't go to size 1's. The newborn should be good for his size. He would prob leak more with the bigger diaper...I think johnny had a few times when that happened but not often...if it keeps happening for any reason you could always try a diff. brand diaper (johnny would leak through huggies so we switched to pampers and it stopped). You never know!

It might have been a one time thing. See what happens tonight.

Rylan did this in the beginning too...turned out it was stuff I was doing. I was putting to much vaseline on the diaper because of the circumcision so the pee wasn't being absorbed. I aslo wasn't pointing his peshe down. Once I corrected those things there are no more leaks.

Just be sure to make sure the front tabs are very tight...that is what the nurses told me at the hospital....make them as tight as you can (it won't hurt the baby).

Maybe the diaper was not put on correctly. Make sure the tabs are tight around the belly area, it won't hurt him

WOW!! Hooray for sleeping in the crib!!!! I think the newborn are the right size for him, Size 1 would be huge. I think you just have a good pee pee and pooper on your hands!!!

Keep the size NB for now. You can go to size one for the next pack if you like. The NB's should last you about 1 month or so. If he is soiling his diapers that should not be a problem at all. However, if this keeps happening I would talk to your ped about it.

Same here - especially pointing his privates down Makes a big difference! I also fold down the top of the diaper too before I put the tabs on. It creates another little barrier to stop the pee from coming out from the top.

I used to change Michael non-stop when he was a newborn...between poop at every feeding and pee, his diaper uesd to leak ALL THE TIME. So its quite normal. Just change him frequently, like every hour or two...it'll get better!
So glad he is sleeping in his crib!
