Is it ok to raise your voice at a 9 month old?

I was with my mom's friend yesterday and DD was a little cranky. She just tends to have a very sensitive/grumpy disposition. So my mom's friend was asking me if I ever raise my voice at her. I said, "of course not." And she told me that I should?!?! Chat Icon She said that the only way that she'll learn that the way she is acting is not appropriate is if I raise my voice and tell her so. She said that I can definitely change the way she's acting by putting my foot down. I just think 9 months is a little young for that (Not to mention I am a softy.). I need some opinions though.

I don't scream at DS but I will raise my voice and try to sound stren when he's doing something he's not supposed to- like trying to get the safety things out of the outlets, going near the liquor cabinet, or trying to stand on the TV. He needs to know what he can and can not do and I believe that tone of voice will help teach him.

I do the same. DD always tries to climb out of her inflatable tub. I have to let her know its not ok.

If the child is doing something wrong - of course! But if the child is just in a grumpy mood - not at all!

Same here. He also tries to climb the safety gates and I sternly tell him NO. Or when he goes for the dog food. BUT, if he is just having a cranky day I don't yell for him being cranky.

At 9 months I don't think I ever raised my voice at DD. I'd be lying if I said by now at almost two I never have but honestly I make a concious effort not to. I usually remove her from the situation and hold her in my lap and talk to her in her ear and let her know how she is acting is not nice, acceptable, etc and that if she can't change how she is behaving we'll have to leave.
I grew up with a mom who yelled and honestly it made me not listen to her and I was always afraid of her.

I think talking in a stern voice toshow your displeasure at an action or her attitude might be ok, and a little different then say raising your voice as if to yell.

Yelling is not gonna do anything, but a too normal or too nice tone of voice wouldnt get her attention either.

I agree it's the tone not the level that will stop them. Unless of course they're doing something dangerous, then I lose all sense & scream. The stern voice can come later.

For crankiness or behavior, stern & calm is the better option IMO.

I agree, a few things have made me scream (touching the stove knobs, pulling away from me and running toward the street), but usually I try to just change my tone to show her something is wrong.

I agree too. If she is doing something unsafe or inappropriate, change the tone in your voice. Babies react to tone. The associate higher pitches to something pleasurable. Bella is only 6 months (as you know) and I've had to use a stern voice with her, especially when she is trying to roll off the changing table. I feel like she needs to know there are limits.
