Is it possible to put a Newborn on a schedule?

Milani has been here for 12 days, and I keep getting asked if I've put her on a "schedule" yet. Is that actually possible this early??? I figured I'd wait to see how/what her sleeping/eating habits were and try later on, like when she's a month or so. I personally don't see how, when for the most part as newborns all they do is sleep/pooop, pee/eat. As they get older you can try keeping them awake longer ...but I'm defenitely curious to know if this is possible.

DS will be 8 weeks and I am attemting to think "some" of his routine is on a schedule (like night sleep). BUT I am not fooling myself. Each day is still trial and errors.

At 3 months the day I think I finally have him on a schedule is the day he decides to throw everything up in the air!

I don't think we started getting into a real "schedule" until at least 3 months- that's when I started. Now we're pretty much like clockwork within a half hour give or take.

It all depends on the baby. Lily thrives when she's on a schedule. She set it mostly on her own, with a little help from us, and she changes it in bits and pieces when she feels like it, but for the most part the days are all the same.

Re: Is it possible to put a Newborn on a schedule?

I am really trying right now to get him into some sort of a routine - and it has pretty much been the same for the last couple of days.

That being said - there is no way in hell we had any sort of schedule when he was 12 days old. The ONLY thing that was every three hours without fail - was my little man needing to eat 6 ounces. Chat Icon

Re: Is it possible to put a Newborn on a schedule?

12 days old is too early, but i did try to space out feedings at least every 3 hrs when DS was 2 weeks old.
Now I have him going every 4 hrs.

so true!!!
I dont think you can put a newborn on any type of schedule...they will sleep when they need it , not when its "time"....they will cry to be fed when they feel ready ....etc....not till about 3 mths I think, then you can start to *try*Chat Icon

Just like my mom telling me a 6 weeks to CIO Chat Icon

The only "scheduling" we did was a bedtime routine and lights out overnight. Even if he didn't sleep through the night, he knew no playing overnight...

Re: Is it possible to put a Newborn on a schedule?

Basically you can aim to have one keeping in mind that at this stage you need to be flexible..hopefully what you want and what she needs will turn into a "schedule"
