Is it really bad not to give 2 weeks notice?
I think my DH is going to resign from his job. It has been a terrible experience for him with a verbally abusive boss, impossible workload, zero recognition, etc. His spirit is so broken and I don't know what to do anymore. He is considering moving on, even though he doesn't have a new job secured yet (he is looking). He is so no a quitter so I know that is he is even considering it it must be worse than I can imagine.
My question is...is it really bad to not give two weeks notice? I feel like the abuse/taking advantage of him, etc. will be even worse when they find out he is leaving. I don't want to see him go through this anymore.
Any words of wisdom? Any HR perspectives?
Thanks

Does he plan on using them for a reference? If not and you think matters will get worse, I wouldn't.
But if he needs them, I would.

Thanks for your response! No, he will not use them as a reference. Does a new employer have the right to call them and talk to them though?

Re: Is it really bad not to give 2 weeks notice?
I am in the same situation. I am trying to make it another month and quit in March right before I have the baby. I was thinking about whether or not to give them 1 week or 2 weeks notice or no notice at all. My boss is an a$$ and is quite possibly the most disrespectful person I have ever met when it comes to women. I would say for your DH to give them a week's notice at least, but if it comes to a point where he is going to crack, just tell him to quit.

I think so. Within the past year quite a few people left without giving notice. 99% of the time when someone gives notice HR asks that they leave. I feel it's unprofessional.

I think you should give 2 weeks notice.
If you plan to put the job on your resume or if it might be asked what you have been doing, then expect to have a future employeer want to call.
I had one PT job I had to quit on the spot with, but never planned to use them as a reference anyways.

Does your DH works for the same company as my DH used to? I sure hope not! DH was MISERABLE at that job but stayed for over a year until he found something else. even though his new employer was ok with him giving 2 week's notice, as soon as DH got the other offer, he went in the next day and quit with no notice.
to answer your Q, no, I don't think it's bad. when bosses fire you, they don't give any notice. They’ll just have to deal. Good luck to your DH!

in my industry, you can give two weeks all you want - they dont let you keep it (so you can't sabotage any accounts)
so i think it depends, i dont think its that bad if thats the norm in the industry.

Re: Is it really bad not to give 2 weeks notice?
It depends on the company. In my case, if i had given 2 weeks notice they would have told me to leave right then and there. They also don't pay you what you're owed if you leave so most people at my old company would quit on payday to make sure they got their last paycheck. Even then, i lost 2 days pay (the time between when the pay period ended and when i quit) and never saw that check after i left. I was a good worker, but unfortunately worked for a crappy company.

I would leave a 2wk notice. It is unprofessional not to give on and like the other poster mentioned...it will raise an eyebrow.
