Is it true foot massages are bad for pregnant women?
My friend told me pregnant women were not supposed to get foot massages.
Is there any truth to this?

I've never heard this, it seems like an odd correlation.

Re: Is it true foot massages are bad for pregnant women?
Some say that in the thrid trimester a deep massage in the foot can trigger pressure points in the body that can lead to pre-term contractions.
I don't find anything wrong with a light foot rub....

I've been told that there is some validity to the "pressure point" theory.

When I went to get a pedicure, the owner was yelling at the girl doing my pedicure...telling her not to rub too hard on my feet.
I don't know if it's true or not but I was lookng forward to that foot rub...

Re: Is it true foot massages are bad for pregnant women?
when i had my daughter, i went for a pedi 2 weeks before my due date. the entire nite, i had contractions and i am sure it was linked to the massage from the pedi and them hitting all of the pressure points which felt so good.

My acupuncturist told me that when I feel like I am done with my pregnancy to just tell him and he'll hit the points in my feet to make me go into labor. I believe in it.

there is a theory that certain pressure points in the foot can lead to labor... Yep. There are reflexology points that are thought to be too sensitive and can cause contractions. There are points on the ankle as well.

Re: Is it true foot massages are bad for pregnant women?
yes and no.
Yes, there are pressure point in your ANKLES and *can* trigger labor. But you have to know what you do/looking for.
Since this is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine, there is also a concept of "intent".
Yes, you can have a *light* foot massage. There is no rubbing hard or focus on one area.
Yes, you can have pedicures.
NO, you don't go into labor after getting a pedicure.
I will massage the feet as part of a pre-natal massage. It's OK and it depends how are along you are in your pregnancy, if you are a high risk, etc..
That being said, the 1st trimester, you usually dont' give massages even the feet. It's just a very "fragile" time.
Reflexology is COMPLETELY CONTRA-INDICATED.
Just tell the person you are PG and to go very light and ENJOY!

Re: Is it true foot massages are bad for pregnant women?
I was wondering about this myself. My Dr. said it was ok even though I read otherwise in fit pregnancy. I went for a pedicure last week and was still very nervous. I had a wedding to go to and desperately needed one! I'm about 9 weeks and I'm not sure if it was my nerves or the foot massage but I definitely felt weird. I probably won't go again for a while.

Re: Is it true foot massages are bad for pregnant women?
Here is what my massage therapist said- No massage during 1st trimester AT ALL. Do not massage deeply behind the ankles or right above the arch- other than that it is fine. He actually goes to women's houses as a "labor specialist". If you want to get things going at the end, they call him. He said he has a 90% success rate so I suspect you would really would have to know what you are doing.

You can massage the calves.
There is a theory on not massaging the "inner" part of your leg that could be what she means. Again that's based on traditional chinese medecine.

Re: Is it true foot massages are bad for pregnant women?
I can't live without foot massages! I totally expected everyone to respond with "that is just an old myth."
I'm assuming we shouldn't have foot massages in the 3rd trimester?
Since I'm only 17.5 weeks, I don't think I can go into labor yet.

You can totally go into early labor at anytime during your pregnancy.
That being said. You can have a LIGHT foot massage even in your 3rd trimester. You just don't want them to do anything deep or focused. Applying cream to your feet is not likely to give start labor.
