is it true the baby really responds to your voice?
How do you know he/she isn't just moving coincidentally?
I'm reading that mine should be able to respond by now (25/26 weeks) but I find it so hard to believe!!
It it really undeniable that the baby moves directly in response to your voice??

No, its not undeniable. Considering that a one month old baby doesn't always move directly in response to your voice, I doubt a fetus always does!

well I think it was on the baby-gaga website and some other places I read that they can hear us, which I'm sure is true, but I don't see how we would know if they were really moving at any given moment because we were speaking to them??

Re: is it true the baby really responds to your voice?
I know Caden can hear what is going on out here....Whether or not he responds to my voice in general is up for grabs.
I can be laying in bed in the morning and all is quite..we are talking 15-20 minutes..that just waiting for the alarm to go off thing..he wont stir until he either hears me speak..or the alarm clock go off..( I dont have to move to turn off the alarm)...he will then quite back down again...he will be still again until either the alarm goes off again or he hears me yell for someone to get their tushy out of bed...We will continue this until Im fully up and out of bed talking at which point its MAMBO time...

How well do you hear when you are underwater? I'm sure they can hear loud noises and are aware of voices, but I doubt they can hear detail well considering they are floating in liquid under muscle under skin....

Trust me, they can hear you and by birth they know YOU...within hours, even the nurses were in awe of how my little guy responded to my voice instantly...even from across the room.

Re: is it true the baby really responds to your voice?
I have a few weird stories on this one.
My BFF just had a baby a week ago- and when the baby was born, her DH went with the baby to get all cleaned up, etc. The baby was crying- and her DH started talking to the baby- going "Lea, its ok- Daddy's here"- and the baby turned her head and looked right at him. She totally recognized his voice.
A co-worker told me this next story. When she was pregnant with her DD, she used to watch Jeopardy every night. And my co-worker used to hum the tune to the final jeopardy question. So when her DD was born, they had Jeopardy on, and the final jeopardy song came on, and DD stoped was she was doing and just stared at the screen. My co-worker thought it was a fluke, so the next night she put jeopardy on- and sure enough, the same thing happened!
So not only do they recognize voices, they also recognize and become familiar with sounds when they are in the womb!

Re: is it true the baby really responds to your voice?
they may not be able to understand or react specifically to it, but there are tons of studies that show that newborns will react to their own mother's voice before anyone else. Most likely b/c they heard so much of it in utero.
starting on page 1
only an abstract - but gives you the idea
I do notice that when I read to DS that the baby kicks up a storm, but it could also be that I am settled down and he is not being rocked to sleep.

I think they can definitely hear us. DH started reading to my belly weeks ago and he does every night. Every time he gets close to my belly and talks, she kicks! She can be quite alll day but when she hears him, she kicks and stirs!
