Is it true you should not tan? No beach?

I was reading on whattoexpect.com that you should not get overheated (at a tanning salon). Is it ok to get overheated in the sun at the beach?

Sorry for asking so many questions. I don't know where else to turn.

Honestly I cannot stay OUT of the sun but I limit myself, either lather with 45 or cover my belly, put 30 on other sensitive areas, and drink plenty of fluids. I usually can't stay in the sun for more than 2 hours though.

Re: Is it true you should not tan? No beach?

i have continued going to the beach.

I do however stay in the shade as much as possible, although lately with the heat it is still boiling inthe shade. I go in the water as soon as i feel even a bit overheated

and i make sure to drink extra water.

I know they say you burn easier when pregnant, but I havent burned yet!

The website specifically mentioned tanning salons but I was thinking that on a tanning bed, you're usually there for only 20 minutes or so. If you're at the beach, I usually stay for 2-4 hours.

I don't want to hurt the baby but I love the sun!

I am a sun who** and I am always out at the lake. I do drink lots of water and gatorade when I'm out there.

Re: Is it true you should not tan? No beach?

This is the first time in my life I have no tan in the middle of the summer. I have no desire to tan either. This weather has been brutal & I cant even stand to sit in the sun for 5 minutes.

I think your okay if you want to lay on the beach for a few hours. I would def Just keep yourself hydrated at all times & mist yourself with water so you dont overheat.

You are much more sensitive to the sun when pregnant. I use SPF 15 or higher when I'm walking around outside for a while and I get burned. I've also gotten a splotchy rash from the sun. Chat Icon I personally try to avoid the sun as much as possible.

You also risk developing melasma (the mask of pregnancy). Just be careful and use sunscreen.

It is not only a matter of pregnant skin burning easier but also the sun drains you and the baby of any and all vitamins so maybe I would take an extra vitamin?

I have gone to the beach 4 times this year

Your skin is more sensitive when you are pregnant, and you can develop melasma with too much sun.

Not to mention that tanning is bad when you are not pregnant as well, but thats a whole different topic I guess. Chat Icon

Wouldn't body temp getting too high be a concern? I would think it would, but I am not a sun person so I don't officially know.

If I stay cool (go in and out of the water), then would it be ok? Then I wouldn't be overheated, right?

I am already tan from before I found out I was pregnant. I live to be in the sun!

I sit in the sun a lot and I did with my first pregnancy too. I'm also not a water person so I never go in and I've been fine. Just stay hydrated.

There's no way I could stay away from the beach. I make sure I stay under the umbrella (when not chasing my toddler) and I lather up the sunscreen and drink tons of water.

I can't stay away from the beach, I'm a beach girl. Doctor said it's completely fine. I just drink lots of water to not get dehydrated and wear an extra sunscreen 30-45 spf. I swim and everything :)

Re: Is it true you should not tan? No beach?

I've been avoiding laying out in the sun all together as much as it's nice to be tan in the summer. You will burn so much more easier now that you are pregnant, plus my doctor warned me if I tan my belly that I could get the line that runs from navel downwards and it won't go away if you tan that line. Plus you don't want to overheat your little one.

Also you can get this shadow on your face, pregnancy mask....so I don't want to risk any of it. Plus I got badly burned in my 1st trimester in Aruba from wearing 45 sunblock and staying under an umbrella.

They say your belly should be covered at all times and avoid extra heat, B/c it wasnt good for the baby plus you dont want to get dehydrated. I was also told no hot showers.. which i find hard to do.. i dont do as hot as i did not prego.. but still have to have some heat.. otherwise i dont feel clean.

We're headed to Negril on Monday for our babymoon. I checked with my Dr. before booking and she said it was fine. Just say extra hydrated, and use plenty of sunscreen. I bought SPF 50 for my Irish skin, plan on going in the water a lot and picking a spot where I can always get some shade if I'm feeling overheated.

Re: Is it true you should not tan? No beach?

Your not supposed to go to tanning salons, the rays you get there are much worse then going to the beach.
Going to the beach is fine, drink lots of water, try to stay cool and use SPF! Your body may tan differently then it does when your not pregnant, you may be more prone to strange spotting instead of tanning.

so do I- i live for the beach and sun.
You know your limits, abide by them.

Dont over heat yourself.
