Is my neighbor a Backyard Breeder??? - UPDATE!
I'm speechless here... our next door neighbor had 4 dogs, and never got any of them spayed or neutered. About a year ago, one of the boys, a shihtzu/bichon/poodle mix, got their little (8 month old) dachshund pregnant. 4 puppies were born. They kept one and tried to sell the other 3. They put signs up all over town, advertising "shih-dox" puppies, that were "half shihtzu, half dachshund, bred to be loveable family pets", and sold them for $600 each. Don't even get me started on false advertising and how screwed up I think it is that they were looking to profit from an accident... this was about a year ago.
Fast forward to Tuesday. Neighbor comes by and asks if we have any extra newspapers they can use for the puppies. "What puppies?" we ask. It seems the remaining "shih-dox" puppy got its own mother pregnant, because they never bothered to spay her after she had the litter, or to neuter the boys... again. So now they have 4 more puppies, inbred this time, that they're planning to sell as well.
I'm appalled. I don't even know what to think.
UPDATED: She sold the puppies to a pet store. I'm tempted to go there and see how they're marketed - if they're telling customers where they really came from.

Hopefully someone on here has some insight. I don't know what can be done, but I would be appalled too.

Re: Is my neighbor a Backyard Breeder???
Totally a BYB. And it is very dangerous to "straight breed" any dog. (Straight breeding is breeding a parent with a litter, or 2 litter mates).
If she is lying about the lineage of the dogs I am pretty sure you can file a complaint. (IE saying they are daschund if there is more or less to the mix)

I like the first one, but I wonder if there's enforcement of any kind if you don't get that license (obviously, they don't have one, but I have no idea if there's anyone I could tell about it).

Re: Is my neighbor a Backyard Breeder???
I would contact the ASPCA and see if there are any laws against this. That is disgusting.

That's not even a BYB...that's total selfishness and irresponsibility. Call your local PD and ask who would enforce the breeder law...it may be them or it may be the local animal control. Either way I would make sure they are reported.

Yes if there is a law there is a body to enforce it. Call the SPCA and see what they say. If they are not helpful, then call the PD. If that still does not work maybe try to contact a rescue org in your area. Many of them know people on the "inside" who may be able to help you take action.

You should go there. Tell the pet store about the parents of the puppies.

Wow, I am speechless. Talk about inbreeding, the people who buy these pups are suckers indeed. Isn't there a regulatory agency you can report them too?

This is so scary!!! What Pet store is it ok to say?? Have you confronted them(Meaning your neighbor)? I am by no means saying you should or shouldn't.... just wondering? I hope the SPCA does get involved.

Re: Is my neighbor a Backyard Breeder??? - UPDATE!
it 100% is a byob. any responsible breeder wants a relationship with the people buying their dog. they have a contract stating they'll take the dog back regardless of any problems in the future. i know my breeder is part of the dachshund club of america and had to sign a contract stating they'll never sell to a store and they're investigated and everything to make sure it's a responsible breeder.

It's a pet store out here in California, and I don't think it's a chain - I'm not going to say the name just to be safe for now.
I haven't confronted my neighbor because I don't even know what to say... When she first told me about the puppies, I expressed concern and asked her if she planned to have the parents spayed/neutered now after the fact. The answer was yes, but who knows if they have been.

That's something I've been trying to find out. I found county regulations on how many dogs you can have in a household at once without a breeding license, but now that the puppies are gone, they're back below the limit. And there are fines for breeding without a license, but I don't know how I could prove it at this point. It seems that she wasn't really intentionally breeding, it's not an ongoing business... from everything she's said, it was an accident that the dog got pregnant because she was irresponsible and didn't spay/neuter. I'm not at all sure what can be done, but I don't want it happening again and again.

I know for me I hate to live with atomosity so if it were me I would do the same exact thing you are. And your not sticking your head in the sand. I really feel sorry for the actual dogs that are being inbred they are the victims here. Poor babies. The result of this situation is very grim. Especially since they are already in the pet store. Now what!!!!
