Is sleeping on your back really bad?

I love to sleep on my back, but I read that you shouldn't, so I toss and turn all nihgt.

Is it bad for the baby?

I am going to ask my dr as well tonight because I am so much more comfortable on my back (especially when it aches) and on my right side. I hope it's okay.

I think that the problem is once the baby starts getting big, you run the risk of your internal organs being compressed when you'rw lying on your back.

You are supposed to sleep on your left side.

That being said, a lot of doctors say getting your rest is better than not being able to sleep at all.

I also believe your body will "tell" you when you can't sleep in a certain way anymore.

I try not too, but usually I wake up or dh gives me a shove when I'm on my back so I turn over on my side. You can't help how you turn when you're sleeping...

Trust me, you will know when you have to stop sleeping on your back. You will not be able to breathe...

Re: Is sleeping on your back really bad?

Its only a problem once your over like 16-18 weeks. At that point, yes you could be hurting the blood flow to the baby....My Dr said if you catch yourself, turn over right away, not to purposely lay that way and you should be ok.

And if just laying in bed, prop yourself up with pillows....

All my life I only slept on my belly or back - needless to say I've been having restless nights lately!!!

Re: Is sleeping on your back really bad?

My doc told me what's important is that YOU get sleep!

As long as you are not high risk there's no reason not to sleep on your right side or back.

I slept on my back til i was 30 something weeks when the weight of the baby got too high and hurt.

I am a back sleeper, there's no way i could give that up.

Saw my doctor last night and she said that her preference for her mommies is:

Left Side
Right Side
Back (until it starts to get uncomfortable...then try to avoid it all together and do not wait until it is too uncomfortable..at the first sign stop.) Chat Icon
