Is snorkeling a terrible idea for young kids who can't swim?

The boys (ages 3 and 5) absolutely love fish. I thought it would be great for them to snorkel but they are beginner swimmers.

Has anyone taken their young kids snorkeling with puddle jumpers?

Is this a bad idea?

Try to see if they will breathe through a snorkel at home.
My 4 year old did not want anything to do with it.

I can swim just fine and even I spazzed out and took a little bit to get the hang of snorkeling. I would think it would be a lot for them to handle.

I think the puddle jumper is designed to keep the wearer floating on their back, so that might not work. My dd wears one in the pool and floats around in kind of a sitting position or on her back but I've never seen her float on her stomach, unless she's just too young to get herself into that position by herself. But maybe another kind of life vest? When I went snorkeling on vacation (before dd, so just me and dh) we did a tour package and the snorkels and life vests were included. We didn't even have to kick our legs or swim, just floated on our stomachs and let the life vest do all the work. As long as you go in shallow calm water and are there to help them they might be able to do it. Can you try to have them practice with snorkels beforehand in a pool or something to see if they can do it without sucking in water?

Yes. I would see if you could find a plot with a plastic or see through window. You could pull them around. Snorkel is very hard for young kids.

My DS recently asked for a snorkel. He's 4.5 and could not figure if out. He kept swallowing water. My older DS is almost 8, and he's a pretty good swimmer, and he had a hard time too.

i think it would go badly. i still have trouble as an adult with it. I would wait until they could swim better

Re: Is snorkeling a terrible idea for young kids who can't swim?

When we were in Aruba we went snorkeling, but my boys (they were 4 and 2 at the time) didn't. They stayed on the boat with my IL's and then we did put the puddle jumper on and let them swim around watching the fish. The water was so clear anyway you could see them without snorkeling.
I didn't want to take the chance of them swallowing water and getting scared. Just easier to put on a mask and let them look in the water and come up for breathes.

Another option would to be to go to someplace where they can just wade in and look at fish with a mask? Our friends did this in St John.

This is what we will end up doing. I called our resort and the concierge said their private island will have fish and a reef close by.

On our recent trip to the Bahamas, the boys LOVED chasing fish at Castaway Cay. I think if they can see a few fish, they will be happy. They like the idea of snorkeling/scuba diving but they are probably simply too young.

I will buy some masks and call it a day.
