is the baby "involved" at all in starting the labor process?
I was just curious, in a "normal, naturally progressing" childbirth, how involved is the baby?
does the baby or can the baby break your water with a whallop from it's ginormous guatamalan head? (not talking about MY baby, of course )
I guess what I mean is, who says "it's time to come out" the baby, or something else?

I swear DS#2 punched his way out. I felt a deep pain in my cervix and then my water started leaking. Contractions started a few hours later and he was born within 6 hours.

In What to Expect When You're Expecting it says the whole process starts when the baby's brain releases chemical messages that kick off a chain reaction of hormones in the mother

I really think so. DS used to move his fingers inside of me in this rapid fire motion. He was born with super long and sharp finger nails. I think he literally clawed his way out and that is what broke my water.

I saw on some show that one theory is that when the baby's lungs are 100% developed a chemical is released. The show was kind of like anti-petocin and other inducement type things- and that was part of the argument. I havent seen that anywhere else though...

i've read this as well. the old saying is "only the child knows when it's ready to be born."

I was reading too - about how the baby triggers it, they're ready when they're ready and let things start. I'm hoping to not have to be induced or anything when the time comes and let things progress "naturally" - we'll see.
