Is there a dr or nurse in the house..?

So I had surgery 2 weeks ago - my wound is barely healed and is bright red - the redness is starting to move away from my wound.

The doctor saw it and said 'it's okay' but now that the redness is raditing out, I'm really worried that its infected.

How do I know if its infected? I have another appt with dr on Thursday to take out last stitches...

I'm no Dr or Nurse but it sounds like it is infected to me....

If it's just red, I wouldn't be too worried about it....however, if there is pus or swelling around the wound, then you should be worried. Most surgical wounds become reddened and sometimes a tiny bit swollen during the first three weeks post-op.....but any significant swelling or pus oozing from the wound is a tell-tale sign of infection. (PS> I'm an RN and paramedic....so I've seen my fair share of wounds.....I'm also a post-op knee reconstruction patient and my wound took about a month and a half before the redness went away) HTH Chat Icon

Also, depending on wear the wound is, it may be getting irritated (ie...a c-section cut or other belly wounds are constantly irritated by pants around the midline, a boob job may be irriated around the armpit--if they went through the side, etc....) You get the idea. It may be something as simple as constantly sitting and standing, or clothing rubbing against it (all depends on where the wound is)

Thanks for the info.. I had a mass removed from my breast and the incision is directly in my underarm crease.. definetly a difficult area due to the rubbing!

I definitely wouldn't be too worried then---sounds like that's the reasoning for the redness (and it's probably still quite painful, I assume).....hope I was able to calm your nerves a bit. Good luck!! Chat Icon
