I've seen websites and books with floorplans for houses. In only one book, there can be 30+ Colonial houses, all with a totally different layout. I think that most house "styles" are just the essence of that style. Family needs, trends, building techniques, etc have really changed how homes are designed. A lot of styles that used to have very small rooms, and lot of them, are now designed to have open floor plans. Even 100 year old houses often get drastically modified.
