You can probably get out of it but as a penalty they may keep your security. Depends on the company. Subletting in some places could be an option??

I know we're not allowed to sublet, but I wonder if they'd even know? I just really want to get out of this stupidass complex. It's far from everything I need to be near, totally overpriced and the set up is really inconvenient for having a baby. I have to walk up stairs to get to the building, then walk through a breezeway, then around a corner to get to my apartment. Not really working out with a baby and a stroller. Chat Icon

They're definitley NOT commando about it here. I just don't think they'd allow for us to get out of our lease. I guess I need to read it over again and see. I'm dying to move!

I did...and it was with a very know rental community.

Our lease expired in Aug and we let them know that we wanted to break the lease. They told us as long as the could rent it, we would not be responsible for the rent.

FM me if you have any questions.

Also, Beth1210...it is illegal for them to go thru your mail.

I understand that-
she asks the mailman - if a different name is going to an apartment she suspects subleted

I did this too. I was in NYC so they loved me to leave so they could raise the rent! No problems whatsoever. Just gave a months notice.

i did this also. As long as you are reasonable about (like letting them show it to potential renters), if they can re-rent it without any lapse - they shouldn't have a problem with it.

I broke my lease legally with the management company. They allowed us out of our lease but for a cost.
They got to keep our security deposit (which was one month rent) as well as two additional months rent.
It was worth it in our case.

We also broke our lease with a well known management company. They had a policy where they would offer you three options. You'll end up losing money no matter what but for us it was worth it.

Check your lease - I know when we were in MI our lease stated a couple of ways to end the lease early and the penalties if you broke it without those conditions. I doubt they apply for you but hey it never hurts to check. I think they are usually things like relocation due to work etc.

You could also talk to them about if you can find someone to take over your lease (not sublet but to actually sign with the company for the remaining time) they might let you go with a minor penalty (like losing your deposit).

I got out of mine. I just had to pay two months rent and they kept my security. There were other options though. It all depends on your landlord and how nice he is.

Re: Is there any way to get out of a lease w/an apt. complex?

Does your lease say anything about penalties for breaking a lease? If you break your lease, the company has to try to re-rent it. They can't just let it sit there and do nothing while forcing you to pay the remaining rent. If they re-rent it, you are no longer responsible for the additional rent. You are responsible for the rent from the time you leave until the time someone else moves in.
