Is there such a thing as "free" counseling?
This is sort of a spinoff- Is there any kind of free or inexpensive clinic that would provide counseling for someone without health insurance? I'm worried about my brother. He needs grief counseling among other things....

Yes there are - also there are support groups that are free.
I'm not sure how it works but someone in social services should be able to help him out.

Where do you live?
Some places have sliding scales. You could also try your local church.

Re: Is there such a thing as "free" counseling?
Several years ago I got free grief counseling through the hospice that worked with my Grandmother before she passed. They may offer it even if you have no affiliation with them.

Try contacting the local contact for NAMI in your area. (Google NAMI) They should be able to point you in the right direction.
Also, if your brother is affiliated with a church (even if he is not an active parishoner), he might find it helpful to reach out to a priest. I know this isn't for everyone, though... but some people find it really helpful.

Yea I tried that route Kara, he's not willing to talk to a priest but I will check out NAMI. Thanks for the info.
We did have hospice. Maybe I can contact them and see if there's any kind of counseling he can get through them...thanks for the info!

Did he go to college? They may have a center that can help him.

He went to NY Tech but he left because he couldn't deal with all the work and taking care of my mom. He finished Nassau last year

Yeah, it was a shot in the dark. The local NAMI rep should have helpful suggestions, and you might want to indicate that he may be suffering from depression when speaking with them (if you think that he is). My mom did a lot of work with NAMI when she was a professor (had them come into her education classes to give presentations, etc.), and they were always really helpful. I hope they are able to pass along some helpful information and resources for you.
Your hospice provider will probably also have some good suggestions.
Good luck.

Re: Is there such a thing as "free" counseling?
there are colleges that have programs where the doctoral students who are studying counseling give free counseling sessions. i don't have personal experience but i've heard good things. i THINK Adelphi has a program like this, but definitely look around at different universities. i hope your brother gets the help he needs

Perhaps he is eligible for Medicaid? Then there would be several places.
