is this a cheesy gift for my dad?

I do NOT know what to get him at all, he is having financial difficulties, that I know, I know he would not accept money. do you think it would be nice to pay a utility bill for him, or at least a partial payment?

I don't know how he would feel about that or myself for that matter.

If you think he'd be embarrassed - then no. What about a grocery store gift card? Or a gas card?

I don't know your dad, but I know my dad would be very embarrassed by this and might have even gotten angry with me because he wouldn't have known how to handle it.

I would just buy the type of gift I normally buy, or a nice restaurant G.C. and maybe offer some other type of help after the holidays.

I know if it were my dad he'd be embarassed beyond belief.

I think what you want to do is a VERY nice gesture but I think in the end is kind of insulting. It's just one of those sensitive things...

I feel this way about the grocery GC too. Again, it's a nice gesture but could be painful for him.

What about giving him something else you know he may need but that he doesn't have the money for? Or maybe a GC to a restaurant? If he's having financial difficulty, I'm sure he's not spending money on going out to eat. That could be a nice gift.

is he older where he can't do a lot for himself? Maybe something like a gc for a car detailing or spring clean up. A snow blower so he doesn't have to shovel?

Some of the car washes have those deals where you pay one price for unlimited washes for the year, or the season. Do you think he would like that?

ok i would assume that might not go over well, if he wouldnt take the cash

maybe you can purchase him a gift card to the local grocery store, or a super walmart, or is there a company in your neighborhood that could maybe drop off prepared dinners once in a while

How about a Visa Gift Card or Amex gift check.

He could use it for anything, Pay bills or buy groceries.

Omaha steaks or something like that? So he had some nice meals that he can freeze, and then doesn't have to buy expensive meat when he goes grocery shopping. I love receiving Omaha steaks. They also have chicken.

My friends and I paid our friend's bill once as a gift for her birthday. She had just had a baby and was out of work. We called up the electric company and paid it over the phone. She never knew it was us that paid it. We still bought her small gifts and went out with her for her birthday. Maybe do something like that and give him a small gift on Christmas day.

I love all these ideas, I am going to look at omaha steaks - does anyone know the name of a car wash in suffolk that has those GC for all year round? He would use that for sure.

Re: is this a cheesy gift for my dad?

what if you made yourself his own personal mail-order chef....

maybe every Sunday you could make him a tray of ziti or lasagna and/or a pot of soup then put it in indivual freezer bags/trays that he could heat up nightly.

you'd be saving him the grocery money that he could use for the rest of the month and you'd be feeding your dad HOME cooked meals...and a million reasons could be given to him for that that have nothing to do with his financial situation.

it IS work on your part and I don't know what your schedule is like....but it's an idea.
