is this a new trend or am i out of the loop?

I work for a large, well known corporation. recently, many people have resigned, transferred or retired. So we get and email from the person leaving, saying good bye and thank you and what have you. the last few emails have included both home email address and home or cell phone numbers. I find it a bit odd. If I was leaving, I'd only give my # to the people I was close with, if anyone.

Keep in mind, its an internal email, but it literally goes out to over 500 people.

Thoughts?

I would never send a corp. wide e-mail. I'd only did that when I got married and invited people to the ceremony.

If I were to leave, I'd only give my personal info to my friends.

Could they be doing it so if a better offer comes along, people could keep them in mind?

When I worked for Morgan Stanley....I NEVER saw a goodbye message.... but now that I work for a Law firm, everyone sends out a goodbye message (unless they were fired) and includes their new email address (either personal or new work one) and a phone number!! I think I would only give that info to a select few that I have become close with....not the whole NY Firm base!!



but then again...thats just me!!

I've gotten many of those at my old job, since it was a revolving door there.

I usually would see it, read it and mumble under my breath "I didn't talk to you when you were here, I'm not starting now.."

They do this at my job too. I guess if you're retiring after 30-40 years, some people want to keep in touch with as many co-workers as possible

There are so many people that work here so we see people come and go. but i've never spoken to any of these people. they are not in my dept., nor in my building.

i find it odd to say the least.

yeah, a lot of people do that at my company when they are leaving as well.

When I left my old job I only sent a goodbye email to those I was friendly with and I put my home email address. That's it.

people did this at my former job as well. very assuming IMO.

when I left, I sent out a few individual emails, not 1 to a massive distribution list.

I've seen these types of emails. Usually they get recalled from anyone's inbox if they have been unread. This has happened at past companies. I think the "Nice knowing ya" emails were frowned upon.

But for me, I'd only give that info to a few close people who I'd actually WANT to keep in touch with.

I would only send it to those I was close with.

the trend in our office is to send around an email alerting everyone to the celebratory happy hour in honor of this person leaving.

When I left I only sent an email with my personal email address to people that I was friends with or would keep in touch with. Even though it was very tempting to send a company wide email saying, "See Ya Suckers!" I hate getting those mass goodbye emails. Most of the time I have no clue who that person is.

well, for my birthday i made a picture invite and postd it to my friends myspaces'.... and it has my number on it. i cant imagine how many ppl will see it, but i sort of dont care.

that always got me thinking to myself "why on earth would you send this to everyone at the agency?" i think its totally inappropriate.

That happens here. This is a very large law firm so the emails are going to several hundred people too. I can't imagine I would do that though. If I want you to reach me, you know how to long before I say goodbye.

We don't allow people to send those kinds of mass emails.

So you can only send it to individuals and it would take them a LOOOONG time to get all the people in doing it one by one.

These are commonplace at my last two jobs... I just and hit delete. I just don't see a need for it, imo.

its not the email, its the home phone numbers that i find kind of alarming.

half the time i read the email and delete it and never think of it again.

Yeah, we get that a lot too..but thankfully no phone numbers or email addresses.
