Is this diaper rash.. (sorry so long)

Poor DD has had Diarrhea for the past 3 days and I guess it gave her a diaper rash, daycare said that she was crying in pain, they didn't know why, they thought ear infection 'cause she was tugging on her ear. When I first changed her after daycare = SHE WAS RAW. They didn't see that???? anyway, I really think they left her with poopy in her diaper, but whatever, I am sure it was not done on purpose.

We went to dr. and they said ears are fine, she is teething bad though. Dr. said it maybe a stomach virus causing the diarrhea - she gave us prescript. for medicated rash cream.

DD can't sit - she is in so much pain, the cream seems to help a little, then she has diarrhea again and it is all irritated all over. She is even having trouble walking.

any suggestions? would motrin releive some pain? No fever though, I hate to give that without fever.

thanks all.

Re: Is this diaper rash.. (sorry so long)

My kids get like this if they get diarhea!

This is what I do.. while she is home, take off her diaper and just let her roam without anything on to air out the raw skin. Also, when you change her, DO NOT USE wipes! They irritate the skin. Instead, take her to the sink and clean her with warm water and then pat her bottom dry.

If you have to go somewhere and she obviously has to wear a diaper, try one of the two on her. after you've cleaned her bottom, make sure to pat dry her bottom... and then either a) sprinkle a load of baby powder with corn starch on her bottom or b) use triple paste on her bottom.

Good luck! It's the worst seeing them in that pain! I hope she gets better soon!

ok, Thank you I will try this. Hopefully the prescription cream kicks in, but it says ONLY 2x a day.

Also wanted to add that letting her bum air out, and using washclothes with just water should help. Baby wipes also irritated my daughters bum when she was younger.

I have the cream at home, nycetin or something, my DH is with her today, I could NOT send her to daycare, she was in too much pain.
I think she is home more than she is there.

eta: I called daycare and they said NO, she wasn't in a dirty diaper long -- you know I wish they would just tell the truth - when I dropped her off she was fine, I truly feel like they are lying to me. Chat Icon

Re: Is this diaper rash.. (sorry so long)

Probably Nystatin....which is used to treat a yeast-type diaper rash.

They are fairly common, don't worry about it too much. My DD had her fair share of them and the DR said she was just prone to them.

I have certainly had days where I left the diaper on her for maybe 15 minutes because we were in the car on the way home, and she got red from that short amount of time.

The reason wny I asked what type of cream it was is because I've used Nystatin before, and it rubs off easily. It is a very thin cream. So what I recommend with that cream is putting nystatin on first, then something thicker like balmex or triple paste on over it. That'll help so that it doesn't just rub off onto the diaper, and my pediatrician said it's fine to do it that way.

Good luck. She'll be better soon!
