Is this normal?
I just called my OB/GYN to make an appt for a preg test. They told me they don't see anyone until they're six weeks. I have an appointment for March 2nd. Do I really have to wait this long to find out? Is this normal protocol?

Re: Is this normal?
My Dr's office took me in right away for blood work, and then had me come in 4-5 days later to do more bloodwork and check my numbers.

Re: Is this normal?
I think 6 weeks is actually kind of early
7-8 is the norm for a first visit

Re: Is this normal?
That's how my doctor's office handles it as well. With DS we went in at 7 weeks and I asked why the wait..
If you get a positive on a HPT she wants to see her patients at 6 - 7 weeks so that she get them into the sono to see the sac and heartbeat.
Personally...for as long of a wait as it seems I preferred it because I got the sono right away...no waiting on results...I got to see my little munchkin right away. Also because I can't take that much time from work and saving so many trips was helpful.

I didn't actually see my Dr. until I was 8 weeks, but the nurses did my blod work right away.

Re: Is this normal?
Okay, so I think I got it. I POAS ( ) last night and this morning. I can go to my PCP and get a blood test but it's normal for the OB/GYN to see you after 6-8 weeks. Now, another question, is it bad that my DH won't be there with me? He works in Rockaway (I'm in Mineola) and he would never be able to get there without calling in sick.
BTW: my PCP is going to kill me. I haven't been to see him since 2007.

Re: Is this normal?
unless you are being monitored by an RE, this is totally normal protocol. i didn't see my OB until i was 5 weeks 5 days and that was early. i didn't have my first (official) sono until i was 8 weeks.

they don't really do much at the first visit. most OBs don't even do a sono. they will do a urine pregnancy test (looks like the dollar tree tests) to confirm and they will draw blood or give you a script to get blood drawn elsewhere.

Re: Is this normal?
6-8 weeks is generally when they want to see you.
If you took a home pregnancy test (which is what POAS refers to-"peed on a stick"), that is your proof that you are pregnant. The OBGYN would probably do the same test. Some do blood work right away, but not all so they don't have you go in right away because you can do at home what they would do in the office.
I remember being frustrated when I first found out I was pregnant with DD because I wanted some sort of "official" proof before I shared the news. I ended up going to urgent care where they gave me a urine test-basically the same thing as POAS I could do myself.
In any case, if you POAS and you got a BFP, that is your confirmation.

Re: Is this normal?
I just called my PCP and they told me it would all my doctor would do is give me a script to get blood drawn, and that it would be easier for me just to wait for the OB/GYN. I guess I'm waiting. I'm just concerned about prenatal care. I'm an avid runner and have questions about whether I can continue this practice etc.

All drs say that if you've been doing it before the pregnancy you can do it during but watch your heart rate and avoid stomach work. It cannot get too high. But if you were doing it before...doing it during is fine.
You can always just call and ask these questions too. they'll have to answer you!

you do not need to go to the doctor for a pregnancy test. Take an at home one, if it is positive, you are pregnant

Sounds good to me . (What I really meant was I can't wait to tell my family. My mom and dad know. My dad's kind of funny. He keeps asking how accurate the test is, when I took it, if I've had symptoms.)

Re: Is this normal?
If you really want to see them, then call them back and tell them you would be more comfortable seeing them and you insist they move up your appt if they have any availability. They should have no problem with that.
May as well get started in the area of speaking up for your kid now!

Re: Is this normal?
I think I'm going to be in the minority here, but my doc wants to see you within a week of taking a HPT. I was a little over 4 weeks when I went and they gave me a prescription for prenatals, a script for a ton of bloodwork, and answered any questions I had. I go back at 7 weeks for the first sono and to go over the bloodwork results.
