Is this normal sibling behavior

DS is 2 years older than DD and she is 6 mos old now. His behavior towards her gets me a little worried at times. Sometimes he can be so sweet to her, but other times he can be so mean. He will pull her leg or arm, squeeze her leg or arm, grit his teeth while doing this, step on her, etc. He doesn't do this all the time but when he gets frustrated he goes right to her and pulls her arm and grits his teeth. Is this normal?

Re: Is this normal sibling behavior

I honestly don't know. My kids are further apart though-DD is 3 and DS is 8 months.

She has never exhibited this behavior but I have heard other people tell similar stories of the adjustment period when a new little one joins the family so I think it is pretty normal.

However, I think it warrants addressing to encourage him to get out of this phase fasterChat Icon

My DS is 3 and yes he does this. My DD is 8 months. Is it normal? I don't know.

I have been addressing it, but he is only 2 and doesn't really understand how to express his emotions.

Yes, DD is 3.5 and DS is 12 months. Sometimes DD can be such a great big sister and sometimes she is downright mean. I remember doing the same things to my younger brother though so I can empathize Chat Icon Chat Icon

I hear it gets worse though and I am not looking forward to that.

I do think it is normal behavior.

Mine are 16 months apart and they fight physically a lot but they all hug and kiss a lot too. Chat Icon

DS1 is 2. DS2 is 3 months. The older one loves his little brother, but at times, will take out his frustration on the little one. He will be mad at me for not getting his way, and will hit his brother. Sometimes, when he looks like he is loving his little brother, he is squeezing him.

I do believe he doesnt understand boundaries.

Thank you this is exactly what he does. I am torn between ignoring the behavior because he does it for attention or scolding him when he does it. So far ignoring the behavior has worked better but he still does it when he is frustrated.
