celebrate being a woman..fashion that's all great.. I love that!! But..this outfit imparticular...to me sends the wrong message to young woman. The "illusion" shorts as she calls them. Really?? Why do you need people to wonder if you are wearing shorts.
they may be a thinner material and more comfortable for her to move around in.
I mean, did ANY of you see the match? or are you just going by this picture?
I watched the match, I never saw any part of her for longer than an eye blink.
what I DID see was a strong, quick, fast, graceful, confident woman putting the hammer down on her opponent.
it's sad that she would have to worry about what undershorts she wears. she's covered...it's the same as wearing a flesh colored bra. no one has to wonder. it's obvious she has something on.
Come on.. you really believe this wasn't for shock value?
At the mall tonight I am going to have a flesh colored bra on with a shirt...I am going to jump around and flash everyone and see if anyone says anything.....

I really don't see what the big friggin deal is at all. She is a kick asss tennis player with a sick body...enough said. It's not like she is naked under there and intentionally flashing her nether regions...I think people need to lighten up a bit.

is that a lace tennis outfit?
Yeap.. I think it's totally inappropriate! Do you really need to wear this while playing? Bad for woman's sports.. sorry flame away!! I was an athlete all my life and this is just ridiculous!!
That's her style, she is almost like the Dennis Rodman of tennis
I've seen her play, she's amazing with or without her tush out

Re: Is this picture for real???
Being a powerful woman in sports definitely sends the right message to young girls. Working hard, persevering, succeeding--all great messages.
But doing it in a black/red lace outfit--is NOT sending the right message. It shows that even when competing in a sport, you should be sexualized. That isn't necessary.

it doesn't say (at least to me) that you SHOULD be sexualized.
it says, you CAN be sexy if you CHOOSE to be and still be a rockin athlete...
I HIGHLY doubt ANYONE is selling the sex appeal of the Williams sisters (Anna K....SURE but not those two) and considering what they have done for women in the sport of tennis, the LAST women I'd call out for using their "goodies" for appeal is those two.
and AGAIN, this is a MILLISECOND of a moment. it's not her with her asscheeks out posing for a magazine.
how many times has the wind caught your skirt off guard?!?! I know its happened to me, and I don't play tennis professionally (or wear Illusion shorts)

I actually see it in the opposite light. I feel that she is a strong, athletic woman who is showing young girls that you don't have to be a size two or less to have a rocking body.
She works hard for it, and she HAD shorts on. Why shouldn't she show her style?

"Scandal" = ratings.
Ratings = money
Money = more leverage that women playing these sports deserve the same amount of prize money as men.
That's what being a professional athlete is all about, right?
She's expressing herself as an individual - I played tennis my whole life and don't see anything different with these then the godforsaken white bloomers I had to wear in high school, even when AF was in town.

That's just totally uncalled for
She was wearing spandex shorts in a color similar to her skin so that they wouldn't be totally obvious if anyone saw them (which could easily happen when wearing a short skirt). Should she have worn shorts in a different color? none at all?
I see absolutely nothing wrong with her wearing these shorts, and calling her nasty is pretty childish considering the discussion going on about her abilities and as a professional athlete

I dont care what color shorts she wears, or if she wears any at all. She is just gross to me....and last time I checked, I was entitled to my opinion.

She may be a great tennis player. I didn't say she wasn't. You see nothing wrong with it. Good for you. But to ME.. on appearances alone from this picture and others I saw I think she's nasty. And honestly she could have worn black shorts...red shorts...anything not see through. I would hate to see what the front of those shorts look like ETA: Not even sure what color the shorts are. But in this picture..they look see through. Just my opinon. Like you have yours.

Re: Is this picture for real???
the shorts are NOT see through. they are skin tone. like a TON of lace dresses I see in stores that are lovely and not skanky.
in any event, watching the match yesterday I thought NOTHING of her outfit. it seemed fine.
these still photos seemed to have captured the most fleeting of moments and are know capitalizing and sensationalizing it. but whatever...it's what rocks our collective boat these days.

Re: Is this picture for real???
I do not see the big deal. She is an incredible athlete AND pop culture fixture, who is into fashion and I think even designs her own clothes.
The shorts are a cple shades off from her skin.
I see no difference bw this and when women wear sports bras/bath suits and play Volleyball in the Olympics.
Much a do about nothing IMO

Re: Is this picture for real???
Maybe I'm crazy....but isn't the traditional woman's tennis outfit a short little skirt with lots of pleats? One that might flip about in a breeze as you jump and play tennis..... How is this any different? Because it's not white cotton?
I say good for her! She's a phenomenal athlete who also has a personality and she's not afraid to show it. I think she's a wonderful role model for young girls. She's strong, talented, comfortable in her own skin, and knows who she is. If that isn't a role model, I don't know what is!

Re: Is this picture for real???
First - I'm a tennis fanatic. If Venus's outfit get more people to tune into tennis, then she's doing something right in my opinion.
Agassi would wear white shorts at Wimbledon and go commando. White shorts + sweat + commando. . . not much left to the imagination. I dont see the drama here with Venus.
Venus Williams is a phenomenal athlete and has done more for women's tennis in the last 15 years than pretty much anyone else - her career longevity, her consistency, her work with Billie Jean King to ensure equal prize money for women, her 'no drama' attitude on the courts (she is intimidating -but she's not a drama queen like Serena, or makes excuses when she loses - like Hingis, Serena, Henin).
She gives loads of time and money to charity, largely stays out of the press, and works incredibly hard.
She always wears a designer outfit for one of the slams - or works with a designer in coming up with something. I'm not a big fan of some of her choices (though the Vivienne Westwood corset tennis dress she wore a few Wimbeldon's ago was a stunner) but I dont see the big deal. At all.

I have no problem with her bare arse being shown with or without see through shorts. I have a problem with a lace tennis outfit. I'm not saying women can't pick their own outfits, but LACE????? Come on. Not a good message at all.
And her back muscles are sick. What I would give for that back!
