Is this possible?

There is a small "room" off our kitchen - it has the door to the garage, a small closet, and has a door to the backyard. We NEVER use this door. If you walk in from the garage, that back door is directly across from it and the closet is to the left of the door.

We're planning to make this a mudroom and want to close up that unused back door.

Can we just remove interior molding, door handle and insulate/sheetrock over it?

I am looking for the "easiest" and most cost-effective remedy.

You mean leave the door in place and seal only the inside up?

Sure its possible but I wouldn't do it. You won't get the insulation value you need really and its not going to look nice. Why not just remove the door and frame in the opening. That way the outside and inside look correct rather than a patch job.

For I wasn't going to remove the door and close it up from both the inside and outside, I'd probably just leave the door there.
You'll regret closing it off from the inside and leaving the door on the outside. The sheetrock will start to look gross and you'll get dead bugs and spiderwebs back there. We had windows covered like this from our previous homeowner and it was pretty unsightly.

Just block the unused door from the inside. Ours has DIY stained glass, it's horrendous. I cover it with a curtain as if it's a window. No one knows the door is there, we never use it.
