Is this too much to ask of SIL?

My mom watches my DS and my brother's 4 & 7 year old.

Mom is going on vacation for 3 weeks.

So both SIL and I will be need to figure out who will watch our kids for these 3 weeks.

Is it too much to ask SIL to watch all 3 for one week if I do the same for her?

DS is only 9 months (will be 11 months when my mother goes on vaca).

For her kids, I really only have to pick them up from school and watch them from 2:30 to 6:30 and they are pretty good kids and entertain themselves, whereas she would have to watch DS all day and take care of a baby.

We have a pretty good relationship, but not great.

Do you think this is too much to ask of her?

Not if you are offering to do the same for a week. I think that is a very good option.

My parents care for my DS and for my nephew. My parents will be gone for the entire month of March, so I know that my SIL and I will have to depend on each other alot during that timeframe.
I think since you are offering to help her out as well, it shouldn't be a problem.Chat Icon

I’m not sure if it’s exactly fair I think it depends on the situation. If SIL work situation allowes her to half days so she could be home for the kids or if she could work from home after they are picked up then I would think it would be unfair. But if that is the situation she won’t agree to watch your child anyway. If she needs to take off of work then I think it would be fair althoguth she would watching your child all day she wouldn’t have to take a second week off work to care for her own. I can’t hurt to talk it out and try and come up with a solution.

i dont think its too much if u are going to split the time. you arre sharing equal responsiblity. it would be bad if you only made her do it.

I just feel like it would be much more work on her end, since she has to watch DS all day and he is a baby versus me only watching her pretty much self-sufficient kids from 2:30-6:30.

I guess it can't hurt to ask. I would understand if she didn't want to do it though.

It would be more work on her end, but like you said, it can't hurt to ask. the worst she can say is that it won't work for her.

I have to agree with you. Could you watch her kids more days to even it out a bit.

I don't think it's too much to ask. She is obviously in the same situation where she needs someone to watches her kids. So she has to have some empathy for you. I say go for it. What's the worst that could happen, she says no?

I agree. You said you would understand if she said no so you really have nothing to lose.

I asked and the funny thing is she had the same thing in mind.
