Is this weird - Loan officer at Bethpage Federal CU says that she has limited phone time?
We have been preapproved by Bethpage Federal Credit Union and we were assigned someone to work with.
I called yesterday and her voicemail said that she has limited time on the phone and she usually calls back within 24 - 48 hours, but we can get a quicker response through email.
Is this strange? I am very concerned that, if we choose BFCU for our mortgage, that I will need to get in touch with her and she won't be available. Any thoughts?

while most people don't come out and say this on their vm messages, it's true for most loan officers! they're extremely busy with paperwork, etc. so if they had to be answering their phones all day they would never get anything done. i wouldn't worry about it - if you have something urgent i would just call and leave a message AND send an email with "urgent" in the title and marked as urgent (with one of those red ! things)

Yes it's very true. Honestly hearing some thing like that makes me feel better because I know if I leave a message this person isn't ignoring me.

I used to be a loan officer at BFCU about 6 years ago... never were we allowed to say that through our VM...wow! But, as the PP said, yes, they are extreemly busy with paperwork, and they do recieve sooo many phone calls. I know when I was a loan officer, the emails got answered within the hour that I recieved them, unless I was on lunch LOL. The bank in general is a great place to do your banking...I've worked at another bank and had to quit ... if you arent' comfortable with her, like if she takes too long to respond, you can always request a differnt officer... but I think it will all work out perfectly fine with her.

We have gotten 2 mortgages from BFCU one in 2004 when the market went nuts and they had more loans to write than they had time to write, they wouldnt even tell you who your assigned loan officer was. Then again in 2006 with our next home. They are always very responsive.
I know in 2006 they have people answer the phones (general #) who would try to answer your questions first and if they couldnt then they would refer you to your loan office.
Either way our dealings with them have always been smooth. I know at least 5 other people who have their mortgages there with no complaints.
I wouldnt worry!

Not weird, and at least she was up front. We just closed with bethpage a few weeks ago, and while my loan officer wasn't the easiest person to get in touch with at all times, she got the job done and was a pleasure to deal with. I could always tell how insanely busy she was and i felt bad for hounding her constantly, but sometimes, that's what ya gotta do.

look at it this way- now you have it in writing
ETA- now that I think about it- the 2 main bankers I use for my clients- would never say that
that would bother me
I can get either of them on the phone day or night with in 5 mins
if not I text or email for a response

gotcha. i just wonder in retrospect if things took longer/were more stressful bc we didn't use a REA or Broker (on either our end or sellers).
ppl say sometimes that we had to do all the legwork a broker/rea would have done and it makes me appreciate a lot what they do for you - they really earn that commission. the stress of dealing with all that stuff ourselves in addition to working 10-12 hour days was just not worth it lol.

Thanks everyone. I emailed the loan officer for a Good Faith Estimate. Any idea how long it should take for her to put it together and get back to me?

when we were dealing with Wells Fargo.. i would send Emails.. and i would get an auto-response saying...Thank you for your email. SDC is on quite time until 10:30am. I will be able to reply to emails by then.

HORRIBLE HORRIBLE customer service!!!! They debited money out of our account with NO authorization, had no clue when we called them and we could NEVER get a call back.

Our home loan is through BFCU.
I only contacted my agent through email and she responded quickly.
The best thing, we closed 30 days from the date out contract was signed.
low rate, no points, no broker's fee

Oh no. I had the WORST experience with them. I set up an appointment to get pre-approved for a loan, and the loan officer was literally 45 minutes late to the appointment. I don't know why I even stuck around. When he finally got there he told me he was sorry he was so late, and that he couldn't call into the branch to tell anyone because his cell phone was out of batteries. His cell phone proceeded to ring 3 TIMES during our 20 minute meeting. 
Then, he and I chatted about what I was looking for in a loan. A few minutes into the chat he looked up at me and said, "oh look, you have great credit!" I asked, "How do you know that?" And he told me that he checked my credit report. WITHOUT MY PERMISSION. I know that running someone's credit report only lowers your score by a few points, but with the mortgage industry being what it is, I didn't want to lose any points. I was FURIOUS. Oh and this entire scene took place at a desk about 2 feet from where patrons were waiting in line to make deposits. So about 15 people heard my name, social security #, and address as he said it all out loud while typing it into the computer.
It really seemed like such a "low-rent" operation. And their rates weren't any better than the big banks. I was (and still am) really angry with them and decided to take my business elsewhere.

Ours went super quick in 2006 and we didnt use REA/Brokers either. But i think it probably helped that we had an existing mortgage with them and our new mortgage.
