Re: Isle of Man

Never been to the Isle of Man, but I've been to the Isle of Wight and it's gorgeous! When I was a kid, a lot of Dubliners went to the Isle of Man for weekend breaks. I'm not sure what kind of vacation it would be - not too fancy, I would think.

The Isle of Wight is well worth a visit, but is off the South coast of England in the Channel, while the Isle of Man is in the Irish Sea and more North, off the coast by Blackpool.

When I went to the Isle of Wight, I went by high speed ferry from Portsmouth. It really is a gorgeous place. Lots of thatched cottages, cream teas and yachting.

It all depends on where they are staying? For a day trips, I really liked the following places, all within a train ride from London:

Chester - 3 hours by train. A walled, Roman city.
Warwick - About 2 hours travel. Beautiful castle. Stratford Upon Avon is near Warwick, but I thought Stratford was over-rated.
Bath - 90 minutes from London. Great spas and heritage homes.

My husband works on the Isle of Man on a regular basis, so he is there every six weeks of so. You can get a flight there from Manchester, they run several times a day and it takes like an hour to get there. There isn't much to do there, but when the weather is nice, the scenery is beautiful. Could you spend a week there, I don't know.

Are they staying in London? Its not really a day trip from London really...where are they staying? What kind of day trip are they looking for? There are lots of better day trips than the Isle of Man...Douglas, the biggest city is like one street long. Its not really much of a holiday. Its not like the Island of Sodor.

If they want a city day trip, they should come to Manchester, its a fantastic city. Chester is also a fantastic city to go, its not far from Manchester...lol

so here's the whole picture. My boss and her DH lived in London for 7 years. They are very familiar with the whole thing but are bringing her brother and two neices to visit, staying in an apartment and touring London and other cities. They want to go overnight to the Isle of Man. I priced out Flybe for the air and found a Hilton that has some accommodations. They are just going overnight. I guess they will ride around checking the scenery and such. Is flying out of Manchester better than Gatwick, Luton or London City?

IF they are staying in London it doesn't make sense for them to fly out of Manchester, they should just fly out of London.
