Isn't weird when you think something won't affect you
and it does! My grandmother broke her hip last Thursday, SO me and Phil went into the city today to see her in her rehab place. I didn't even recognize her. Her mind is totally fine, but her body is bruised and old. She is so frail, it really got to me.
We went to her apt to get some things she wanted, she knew exactly where everything was. The thing that got to me is she has kept every card, letter etc.. that me and my siblings have ever written to her. Birthday, Christmas, Valentines's Thanksgiving, Thank you etc.....

Thank you!!! She is my Dad's mom. I called my mom when we got home and told her I was so overwhelmed!! Thank God Phil was with me, he was able to find everything she wanted from the apt. I was no help, I was just overwhelmed and spooked. I don't know how to explain it.

Re: Isn't weird when you think something won't affect you
What you just described, sounds like my grandmother.. She can hardly walk anymore (she will be 89 on Feb 1st), and physically its sad to see. Mentally, OMG she is still the stubborn gram Ive known for the past 30 years. She can tell you anything and answer any ??s you have. She's getting on a plane Sat. to go to CA to visit my uncle. We request a wheel chair for her and off she goes..she goes for a few months @ a time. Awwww..your grandmother sounds great!! My grandmother is also my dad's mom.
ETA: I am so sorry...I hope you grandmother has a speedy recovery!...Enjoy your wine!

My Grandma is 88 and will be 89 in April!!!!
My grandma has lived on her own in the city for 40 yrs, she actually drove herself out from the city to the Oakdale area (Timber Point CC) for my wedding on Oct 1, 04. She refused to let anyone come in and get her.
Maybe your grandma and my grandma can become friends and look out for each other!!!!

That would be awesome..You and I should have a LIF/grandma GTG..what part of the city is your grandmother in? Mine was in Whitestone, Queens up until 1996 when my parents asked her to please move in with them. She was mugged in broad daylight in a shopping center and thats when she decided not to live on her own anymore. She never drove, the bus stop was right outside her house. She belongs to one senior group here on the island, which is good, it gets her out of the house for a bit.

As my Grandma said to today, she is a city girl and will never leave NYC!!!
She lives in Inwood, right off Dyckman Street, which I believe is Manhanttan, but the right near the Bronx border. I am really not to familiar with the city.

Ah Tara
My Great Aunt was the same way. She saved everything. She even took some cheesy table thing that my Mom had out on the tables when she threw me my Masters graduation party. Considering she didn't even really know me I was shocked that she saved it. She lived in the Bronx on the Grand Concourse and she said she would never leave that apartment until she died and that's exact what she got. She died 2 months before my wedding at the age of 93.
It' so touching that those things meant so much to her that she cherished them always!

Wow 70 years that is amazing! There is something so special about that generation that I will never be able to put into words. I love listening to the stories from my great uncles and cousins. They valued things that truly were important (I guess would be the best way to say what I think)
