Issue with Cleaning Service
For the past 14 months, I've had my apartment cleaned every two weeks by a husband & wife team. Either my husband or myself are home when they come to clean. It takes them about an hour to clean my apartment (1 BR, 1 bath, den area, kitchen, and office) and I pay them $65.
The last few times they've cleaned I've just not been that happy with their work. For instance, when they clean the countertops, they clean around the appliances. The appliance doesn't get cleaned nor does the area behind it. Same goes for the stuff that's on my dresser. If I don't take the placemats off the kitchen table, they would only clean around the placemat. I have to tell them to take the rugs out of the kitchen so the entire floor gets mopped. They don't clean the windows (inside or out) unless I tell them. They have never bothered to dust on top of my bookcase or china cabinet - the tops are totally covered with dust. I could go on.
Am I being too picky? Should I get an estimate from somewhere else? For the girls that use a housekeeping service, are the items that I mentioned above included in your cleaning?
I would appreciate some input.
TIA!!
ETA: Do you think that the price I am paying is fair? If your living space is similar to mine, how much are you paying?

Re: Issue with Cleaning Service
We are in NJ and have a LR, DR, EIK, 3 bathrooms and two bedrooms. A downstairs and upstairs hallway (and a laundry room). We pay $65. My cleaning lady does remove things and move things to clean. I would be upset if she did not do that. She removes rugs and rug pads and cleans underneath them. We have a thing on top of our kitchen table and she removes it and cleans under and on top of it.
I would address your concerns with your cleaning company. I would give them one or two more times to improve after you have had the discussion. I feel if you are there then you can point out what you want them to do. If they don't improve then I WOULD look for someone else by asking your neighbors who they use.

The husband & wife are self-employed so I would have to address them directly. I also feel that I shouldn't have to "babysit" them while they're doing their job. They're getting paid VERY well for the amount of space they have to clean. I can't believe you pay the same amount for a house 3 times the size! How often do you have them clean? Is it just one person cleaning?

Re: Issue with Cleaning Service
i have a 4 br 2 ba house and pay $75 every 2 weeks.
they don't do the top of my china closet--i honestly wouldn't want her climbing on chairs or anything to do it anyway in case she fell. she also doesn't do my windows. sometimes she'll do the inside, but the outside is extra. i'm fine with that.
the other stuff you mentioned i wouldn't be okay with. you should talk to them and tell they what you expect from them. if they don't do it, find someone else.

Re: Issue with Cleaning Service
I would have an issue with it unless I'm just spoiled bc my cleaning person is meticulous and doesn't miss a spot. That said, it sounds like I have a similar size apt and I pay $100 every 2 weeks.

My girl is self employed too, she is the only one who cleans my house. Although the first time she came she brought an assistant for super deep cleaning.
Oh I did not mean to imply that you should baby sit them, what I meant was that when telling them why your are disappointed in their services, take them to your kitchen table and say you have to remove all of the placemats, clean the entire table top and then clean the placemats individually and not just clean around the placemats. I would specify to them exactly why you are disappointed in their services so they can try to change, if they don't then I would get someone else.
She used to come every other week, and is now coming every three weeks but after I deliver DD next month we will be back to every two weeks.
Oh as for cleaning the windows she will only do that if I ask. She normally dusts the wood blinds (we have 17 windows). She offered for extra to clean the outsides but that would involve power washing and frankly DH and I can do that. I don't expect her to power wash my outside windows. With that said once a year she does shampoo my carpets.

Re: Issue with Cleaning Service
I have had a house cleaner for about 3.5yrs and feel the $$$$ is totally worth it. I live in MI so our prices are a bit different. I had a service for 3yrs and became unhappy with them and after talking to them and the manager decided to end the service. I now have a self employed lady that ROCKS! I pay $50 every 2wks and she cleans: kitchen, living room, bathroom, 3 bedrooms and hallway. Takes about 2-2.5hrs and she is just amazing! When she forst came we walked through the house and we went over exactly what I wanted and what she would do. I know if I needed a REALLY deep cleaning I could ask and pay a bit more, but she really is top notch. I'll ask her to do a deep cleaning before the baby comes and to me that is a normal cleaning but adding in window washing, wall washing, and light fixture cleaning. I figure $25 an hr is fair. I guess what i'm saying is talk to them and if nothing changes look for somebody else. I feel like I pay good money for a service and I should get good service. Oh.......I feel 100% comfortable leaving her alone in the house if I have to run around.

Sorry for the misunderstanding - I feel that I'm babysitting them when they come to clean, I didn't mean that you were implying that. I just feel that I shouldn't have to tell them to do certain things, they should be done automatically. They rush in and out of my apartment in an hour and collect their $65 and I'm not even satisfied. Now I see why the wife was telling me recently that they have been losing business.

Re: Issue with Cleaning Service
I totally understand what you are saying
If i have dishes in my bedroom, they do not bring them downstairs to the sink or dishwasher. Its highly annoying, they just clean around them.
They just left, and they did not clean my sliding glass door like they usually do.
They also didnt clean inside my microwave today either and its dirty.
I think you should make a list, keep it running and just write down everything that you think they should be doing. Present the list to them, and go over it with them. See what they say.

Re: Issue with Cleaning Service
My mom has 4 Brs, 3 baths, LR, DR, Kitchen, Den & Sitting room. She pays $85 every two weeks. The women is slef-employed and at first did a fabulous job. Little by little my mom started noticing that she wasn't dusting top of the china closet or wall units, and some other little things. My mom spoke to her about it and she does all the things she skimped on now. But, my mom continues to check and always lets her know if something is missing. She does not wash windows, but dusts the blinds.

Re: Issue with Cleaning Service
I think the things you stated should automatically be cleaned.
I pay 80 every two weeks, and I have a 4bed 2bth colonial. My people are very good - but if there is something special I want done, I do ask them to do it (cleaning the couch) What you are asking them is def. nothing they should be overlooking.

Re: Issue with Cleaning Service
I'd give them a list of exactly what you want done and how you want it done. Then they can use it sort of as a checklist each week. You could even offer to leave them a copy each week. I don't have a cleaning service yet but will be getting one soon. This is what my aunt does for her cleaning lady and she recommends that I do the same. it seems to work.
