My email was freezing the other day, so I shut off the phone (5s) and when I turned it back on, everything was fine.

Re: issues with iphone 5
the only problem I have with my iphone 5 is sometimes while I am using it the screen will go dim and won't be bright again unless I put it to sleep and then go back in to it.

Thanks. I shut it down again and this time it worked. So weird. I'll keep my eye on it.

I took mine, 3 weeks old, in to apple to complain and was told that I have to shut it down completely, regularly, in order for it to take care of whatever it needs to do - such as close down programs. I'd never been told that before, but have been trying it a bit. It seems better.
As for scanning fingers, I was told that with the cold weather our fingers are chapped and change patterns so that the phone doesn't recognize them. Makes sense as my hand and finger tips are soooo dry that I can actually see breaks in the patterns that will go away when my fingers heal.
