It happened again - 6 week old left in car at a Philly Wal Mart Store
NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Police say a 6-week-old baby was left unattended inside a SUV in the parking lot of a Northeast Philadelphia Walmart store.
An Action News viewer noticed the crowd and all the commotion around 6:30 p.m. Monday and quickly hit the record button on her cell phone.
"When we pulled into the lot, we saw people standing around the car and some Walmart employees looking around," the viewer told Action News Tuesday night.
It would soon become apparent to her that a 6-week-old baby boy had been left in a silver 2005 Toyota Highlander outside the Walmart on Franklin Mills Boulevard.
As they awaited for help to arrive, the viewer and others became anxious for the infant's well-being.
"It was hot yesterday, not as hot as it has been past days, but hot inside of a vehicle. And I was really annoyed and aggravated, because why would you leave the baby in the car?" the viewer said.
Fortunately, a police officer arrived a few minutes later, at about the same time the child's 35-year-old mother emerged from the Walmart.
The mother was promptly handcuffed and taken into custody.
"From there they were trying to get her to say where the keys were so they could get the baby out of the car," the viewer said.
The officer finally got the keys to the SUV as firefighters and paramedics arrived on the scene.
A short time later, they took the baby out of the car.
The baby was taken to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children for treatment.
"Makes no sense whatsoever cause there's never any reason to leave a child in the car," the viewer said. "Anything could have happened, the child could have been stolen out of the car; anything could have went wrong."
The child is said to be OK and has been placed in the custody of his father.
It remains unclear how long the child had been left alone in the vehicle.
The fate of the mother is still undecided as investigators continue to go over what she will be charged with. Map My News Link to article - with cell phone video of the rescue

They make it seem like the mother was not willing or being difficult about giving them the keys. I truly hope that wasn't the case b/c that would just make it worse.

It still makes me angry, but I know others have said it, with a newborn like that, you as the mom are likely still very sleep deprived, THIS is one story that I could honestly believe as being a case where the mom honestly forgot the baby was there... Does NOT justify it in any way or make it any better, but at least I can def see this as a mistake and not completely deliberate as I am 100% certain the other stories recently were.
I heard on the radio this morning that some young teenage girl had created a sensor for your key chain linked to the carseat that registers if you've walked away from your car with the child still in the seat.

And we are surprised?
Honestly? There are some people that make a horrible mistake. They do. They forget the kids are in the car and the child dies. It does happen and it happens by accident.
In THIS case? Guess she needed to go shopping and could not be bothered with her 6 week old.

I'm not at all attacking you or being combative. I think you are pregnant now, right? not sure if this is your first, but if it is, please come back after your baby is born and report back if you would ever forget the most important person in your world.
I said this on another thread on FB - I had PPD, we moved into out first house the weekend DS was born, my husband stayed home one day and went back to working 14 hours a day. Despite all that I never even came close to forgetting about my child.

I'm not saying I would ever do this - I'm going by what others have said regarding those first few weeks after their child was born - things that I read on here in fact. Again, I said I'm not justifying but that I could see how it COULD be an accident.
I could never see myself doing it, I don't care what else is going on that child is number one.

It happened again - 6 week old left in car at a Philly Wal Mart Store
We know this unfortunately happens as it has happened fairly frequently in the past few weeks. Every time it has been posted about, it starts a debate about whether this could be an accident, how could a mother forget her child, unfit parenting, etc. Why are we beating a dead horse with this topic? It is unfortunately going to continue to happen and posting about it every time doesn't do anything to help solve the problem.

I was just thinking this, but didnt want to add to this thread bc, like you said, how many times can we have the SAME CONVERSATION.
I dont think it is happening more now than ever or happening "again", its the "trendy" think to report on right now, its a media hot topic. It just SEEMS like it happens more now.
So in conclusion, as we have discussed several times. It happens, you cant say it doesnt. Some people can understand how it happens and dont think it could never be them. So people cannot understand it and know it will never be them. Neither of these parties can understand how the other can think that way.....and round and round it goes.

Re: It happened again - 6 week old left in car at a Philly Wal Mart Store
My question is why was everyone just standing around looking at a baby in the car. Why didn't anyone break a window to get in? Who knows how long it would have been and how long kid was in car. The first thought is Take out a cell phone camera?? Our world is disgusting!

As a parent you're in charge of a HUMAN LIFE that depends on you for EVERYTHING. You don't get to make "mistakes" like this. I don't care how sleep deprived someone is. We're all tired when we have kids, we all don't forget them in cars.
I think it's so absolutely ridiculous that people need 52 different reminders and gadgets so they don't forget their kids. How unfit of a parent are you that you can just forget your child as easily as you can forget your cell phone on the counter???
As an aside, I don't believe for two seconds that *most* of these cases are accidental. I think *most* of the time the parents are stupid and selfish and figure they have things to do so it's easier if they leave their kids in the car while they shop and do their thing.
My faith in humanity is slowly disappearing. So many people just disgust me these days. I'm tired of hearing these stories about children in cars, it makes me sick to my stomach.

I agree. I don't think this was accidental! FYI I take dd to daycare and if I forgot I would get to work like 25m early and wouldn't I realize why am I at work so early?
As a new mom you don't forget a newborn you just had!
The only time I sort of believe it was when that dad was suppose to take his infant son to daycare as a one off and forgot him in the car. The mother called to check on how daycare drop off went and the father freaked and realized. Baby was okay but it was very cold and he had been there a few hours. Thank god he lived.
