it is just me or...
are kids just NOT bright these days?!? i'm a speech therapist in a school, and i just had a group of 2, 4 graders.... NEITHER ONE could tell me what a mechanic does!!! i mean, come on! they are 10 years old!! i had another one who had to write somethign for class where he had to describe the beach during a storm... he couldn't do it!! you're telling me your 10 years old, you've never seen a storm, and you've never been to the beach?! UGH! what is going on?!? i really think parents need to spend more time teaching their kids things, and less time shoving them off to different sports practices, karate, video games, etc, etc, etc.

I agree.... welcome to the world of video games, cell phones, instant messanging, TV to the point of excess, movies, Ipods, etc. etc. so many kids know nothing at else... this is also leading to decreased attention spans, language disorders, autism, poor impulse control, etc. they want everything NOW.....
how about reading to your child, limiting or restricting TV, and actually PLAYING outside and socializing?

First of all, I'm not a huge fan of blanket generalizations about "kids not being bright". "Bright" is a very outdated way of saying that a child has above-average intelligence.
I do agree that some students aren't given the same opportunities to immerse themselves in unique and first-hand experiences to increase their ability to build prior knowledge. Sure. We could attribute students' lack of knowledge to video games, etc., but what about parents/guardians who work multiple jobs just to survive and live on LI? What about those families who need to leave their children with sitters in order to make ends meet? Let's not be quick to judge and make generalizations.
And PLEASE, a little PSA - "BRIGHT" is not an acceptable term anymore. This peeve of mine is right up there with "teachers" who call their students AUTISTIC and don't say "students with Autism". Words and labels are very powerful and we, as educators, need to really think before we speak.

ITA! and i say it all the time, parenting is at an all time low. it seems SOME parents want to be their kids friends rather than an authority figure. SOME parents are constantly sticking up for their children when they have been discipline problems, havent handed in homework or failed tests. its a constant battle bc SOME parents believe we are suppossed to overlook these things or its somehow a fault in us as teachers rather than their children for not being responsible conscientious students! THESE parents should stop trying to get their children out of trouble as if the teachers are the "bad guys" and support teachers and help TEACH THEIR OWN CHILDREN! ok my vent is over

Re: it is just me or...
I teach 8th grade Special Ed but the students are on a Regents track.... Thursday we were reading about dolphins. The first sentence says that "Dolphins are mammals". A student asks, "Arent we mammals?' I proceeded to explain what mammals are. The student waits a minute and then asks and seriously, "So that means we are dolphins?" What the ****? And I have to teach them about the Manifest Destiny too?
So to answer the question...they are not as bright.

And PLEASE, a little PSA - "BRIGHT" is not an acceptable term anymore.
there's nothing wrong with calling a child bright. it's not derogatory, and is not "un-PC" i'd be PROUD if any of my own kids were called bright by their teacher, and i consider many of my students to be bright.
to the OP: i TOTALLY agree with you...the lack of common sense of kids lately is unbelievable. it's amazing how many real world experiences they're lacking. i can understand kids in the middle of manhattan not knowing how a beach sounds, but for many kids on LI, they are not getting the exposure to the world that we had as kids. it's sad.

I do not mind "bright" I HATE when people put the disability before the child. The above poster is 100% correct when saying the correct way to say it is "student with autisum" or "student with learning disabilities"
They are students/people first and their disability is ALWAYS second to that.

I agree. It's one thing to say he's autistic...you need to put the person first, so he's a child with autism. However, bright...a million parents would die to hear a teacher say that about their parents.
However, to the OP, yes and no...I don't think it's that they are not as intelligent, but rather that school is not shown to be important. I agree that the number of video games and computer games and tv issues certainly dumb down the kids, but the potential is there. It's just NOT being used. I do see that a blame needs to be placed on the parents. Hi, kids don't need PSP's or tvs in their bedroom or in the car or cell phones with text messaging...they need to learn how to be social and think...they however expect to be entertained all the time and when they aren't, they don't pay attention.
There is a dumbing down of kids.

Technology does not lead to autism. We do not know what causes it yet (despite the theories), but cell phone and video games can pretty much be ruled out.

yes, i realize that... sorry that was not worded the best way.... however, research is indicating that high exposures to TV, etc. is actually decreasing language development and leading to language delays as kids are not actually speaking and interacting when watching copious amounts of TV, videos, etc.

I'm also a speech therapist, but in a High School. The other day I asked them when Colombus discovered America and they said the 1960's. UUMM didn't they learn that in elementary school?
