Its back to school time again. Book Vent

I just went online to see how much my text book will be for my course this semester. It is 190 dollars. Jesus I hate this major. Almost all the texts books are over 150 dollars. How is the man sticking it to everyone else?

It costs a lot of money to make those books! If it's any consolation, after you graduate, you will probably end up in a field that pays more than most people in publishing make. Chat Icon

Or you could end up in publishing.....
I'm a textbook editor.

Are you taking science classes? I was a science major and my books were always over $100.

Quantitative Methods in Management is the class. It's a business class. I found it on Amazon for only 135 now. Looks like that is where I will be buying it.

Oh man, I loved QM. It was seriously one of my favorite classes in my MBA! Are you taking it at Hofstra by chance?

I am taking it at Stony Brook. I hope it is as fun as you say it is. The only prereq is Calc so I have no idea what I am in store for.

I haven't tried that site but I will look at it right now. South-Western College Pub is the publisher. Thanks for the tip.

that is one my worst pet peeves and when you go try to buy used copies, they are all gone or the price difference is not much either.Chat Icon

Oh, can't help you with that publisher!

You can also try Stony Books if you're taking it at Stony Brook.

Oh, don't miss those days! I was an art history major for my undergrad and yeah...the art books were with color photos so you can imagine those prices, too. FOR A BOOK!!!! Chat Icon

Do you have any books from previous semesters that you can sell on Amazon? That might help.

I paid for the membership at B&N, and always order my textbooks online, get free shipping, and I can't remember if its 10 or 20% off, but last year I saved over $200, It's definitely worth it.

Re: Its back to school time again. Book Vent

We get to pick our books ourselves, so any professor that picks an expensive book like that is really being thoughtless. I ALWAYS try and find the least expensive version of a text for my students. I try to only order editions that are under $40 or can be easily purchased used online for less. A lot of professors also use books that they had a hand in publishing, or that is somehow collaborated on by a friend of theirs, themselves, etc. Its SO wrong and it gets me angry for students!
