IUI vs. Intercourse?
What are the pros/cons of both? If timed correctly per doctor, can intercourse be as effective as IUI? Or is one more effective than other when using something like Clomid?
I know this question will come up when I see my doctor next week after I finish my last pill of Clomid, and trying to do some research.

IUI vs. Intercourse?
I haven't gotten that far, but from my research and reading the boards, to me (and this is JMO, and by no means for everyone) timed intercourse w/ meds and IUI w/ meds would seem to be the same. But I get that it's in a more controlled environment so it does add an extra element of control (for lack of a better word) to the situation. If your insurance covers it, then I don't see the reason not to do it, but if your insurance DOESN'T cover it, it would seem that timed intercourse w/ meds would be just as good and save you a little $$$.

Re: IUI vs. Intercourse?
Unless you have hostile cervical mucus, it's pretty much similar. IUI is usually timed a lot better and it bypasses a lot going straight into your uterus sending more sperm out for the egg that way.

IUI vs. Intercourse?
An iui pushes the sperm past the cervix giving more sperm a chance to find the egg.
With timed intercourse you may not get as many sperm that make it through the cervix.

IUI vs. Intercourse?
The biggest difference is that IUiI increases the amount of sperm that reach the Fallopian tubes by placing them directly in the uterus. It's going to be beneficial vs bd'ing if the reasons for infertility are:
Unexplained infertility Low sperm count Decreased sperm mobility Requirement of donor sperm A hostile cervical condition, such as cervicalmucus that is too thick Cervical scar tissue from past procedures or endometriosis Ejaculation dysfunction
Ask your RE as many questions as you can think of and hopefully this will be the month!! Good luck!

Re: IUI vs. Intercourse?
I've always done IUIs because my cervix is set so far back, and the sperm has a long way to go to reach my cervix (DH was none too pleased to hear that ).

this, pretty much. IMO, if your already going for fertility treatments and have any other underlying issues, like PCOS, then an IUI does help more sperm reach the egg.
It also makes sense to me to do the IUI as opposed to TI because since your already going for fertility treatments, you might as well have the IUI done and increase your chances. You can always the night of the IUI (after its done) as it doesn't hurt.

not to mention that they wash the sperm so only the best of the swimmers are injected.
as my Dr explained - instead of having to travel all the way from mid town to Staten Island we put the sperm on a ferry directly LOL

LOL, I like the sperm on a ferry directly comment.
Looks like I need to get more details and see what doctor thinks. First time around he said intercourse was best route and we'll see from there.

u get monitored for follicles growth starting day 12 after taking meds day 3-7 of ur period (same as just medicated cycle). then once they have grown to good size u get injected w/Ovidrel or whatever other trigger shot ur Dr decides on and within 36 hrs ur Dh brings in his sperm, the lab washes it and then they inject into u. they use a tube, so not exactly inject, more spilled into u thru a tube directly into the uterus. they do use speculum FYI

Gotchya - thank you! So its mainly that input of his sperm into me that will be different from last round.
Is it painful?

It wasn't anymore painful than getting a PAP done. I do have to say when they put the tube into you it is a weird feeling but not painful.

Re: IUI vs. Intercourse?
I was thinking I'd do intercourse for my first cycle, for whatever reason. My RE told me that at the office I went to (RSoNY), with their patients, IUI proved twice as effective.
No way was I going through all that monitoring, bloodwork, meds, etc. to only have half the chance of getting pg! So I did the IUI. And had DD 9 months later.

Unless you have hostile cervical mucus, it's pretty much similar.
This. A million years ago, when I was seeing San Roman, he said that statistically just getting the sperm closer (natural cycle IUI) doesn't help pregnancy rate. I know they do IUI a lot with Clomid because it dries up the CM, so in that case, yeah, you need to bypass the cervix.
What always freaked me out (and I have no medical evidence to support this explicitly as a factor in getting pregnant) is that washed sperm don't live as long (12-24 hours) as the au natural sample from DH (3-6 days) and my IUIs were always 24 hours after trigger...but ovulation is 36 hours after trigger. And the washing process significantly cuts back the count. Buuut, just the washing also gets rid of a lot of the banged up, fragmented ones that can contribute to abnormal embryos (and chemical pregnancies), which is good. Yeah, so those are the things that used to drive me crazy about the IUI-or-TI question.
