IUI vs IVF
What is the difference and why is one better than the other? Can someone expand on this for me?

Re: IUI vs IVF
IUI is when they inject your dh's (or a donor's) sperm directly into your uterus using a catheter. They wash the sperm first so that they are just injecting the best. This can be used with or without hormone meds, such as Clomid.
With IVF, you use injectible hormones to help produce as many follicles as possible. Then they actually remove your eggs, fertilize them outside of your body with your dh's washed sperm, and insert the mature, fertilized eggs back inside of you. If there are more than 2 that are fertilized, most ppl choose to freeze the others for another cycle.
The reason IVF rates are better is bc with IUI, you are still taking the risk that the sperm are not meeting up with the egg. With IVF, there's no guessing...you just need lots of sticky vibes.

Re: IUI vs IVF
Yea. That was my next question. I really would like to try the IUI depending on what my doctor thinks of my tests on this past Tues. I had a billion blood tests and a HSG. Holy crap that hurt!!!! I am just so leary about the IVF because of the cost but the chances are better. Oh well, I guess I will know more after next tuesday. THANKS!!!!!!

I just wanted to say that this is not how it always is...
The amt of embryos that are transferred depends on age and diagnosis...I always put 4 back, I know girls who put more that that back. I also know girls that put one back. This is something that will be discussed with your RE.
If there are any embryos left after transfer, they are watched by the lab to determine if they are good enough to freeze. Unfortunately, there is not always a "choice".

Good points. Thanks for clarifying.

Re: IUI vs IVF
IUI is more cost effective with a lower success rate. (but effective)
IVF is more costly, includes hormonal modifications and has a higher success rate.
We opted for the IVF since our insurance covered most of it.
whichever option you choose, good luck!
