IVF without anesthesia
Has anyone ever done, considered, or heard of people doing IVF without using anesthesia? I am getting closer to considering a more aggressive plan, but the anesthesia worries me more than anything else. I have a terrible history with it. Is there any way for them to do some sort of local anesthesia? Is it impossible to make it through without being out?

Re: IVF without anesthesia
It is really only a twilight sleep. You're only out for about 20 minutes. A wonderful little stressfree nap. I find it to be the "best" part of IVF

Re: IVF without anesthesia
It is not general anesthesia. It is basically a strong sedative that puts you into twilight.

Re: IVF without anesthesia
You don't have to have the anesthesia. That's what they told me during my first IVF at American Fertility. I had the anesthesia during the ER. Before the procedure I asked them if I will feel anything, and they said I would be fine. That's when they brought it up that other women don't even get the anesthesia.
And I wasn't out during the procedure. I was having a conversation with the anesthesiologist! But the pain was very mild. I have a high tolerance for pain but there is no way that I could sit through that with no anesthesia. I would discuss with your doctor before coming to a decision.

Re: IVF without anesthesia
My first IVF retrieval I only had 2 follicles and they offered to do it without any anesthesia because it was going to be really quick but I didn't want to take the chance. Like everyone said, you are only under for a few minutes and the feeling is actually really good. You might just feel a little drunk when you come around.

Re: IVF without anesthesia
I usually have a very bad reaction to anesthesia. (I get very sick from it.) I told the anaesthesiologist about it and he said he'd give me a low dose. I had no problems.

Re: IVF without anesthesia
Get the anesthesia. You can tell the doctor how you react and they can adjust.
I would always get it with this procedure but I have had cavities filled without novacaine so I'm no chicken...just for this, the body parts involved, you will be much more comfy and relaxed so it will be quick and painless.
