Re: jack russel pup

Congrats! I don't have one, love them. My neighbor has one. I know they need a lot of exercise and are quite the handful, it should be a lot of fun! Post pics!!!Chat Icon

Re: jack russel pup-PICS added

My mom has one and a friend of mine has 2 - they are very sweet but need lots of exercise, running in the yard etc - very cute! I crate trained my dog and so did a lot of people on here - my parents crate trained their dog for maybe less than a year - she was very good about being house broken. congrats! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Congrats! JRT's are a lot of fun. and work! LOL
We got Katie when she was 8 wks. The first year she was always getting into trouble. She was finally house broken at 1 year and now she is a perfect dog IMO.
She does need a lot of exercise and still loves to chew.
We throw the ball for her everyday and when we aren't home we give her a kong with a treat inside to play with. Let me know if you have any questions. Have fun!

Your dog is so cute. My in laws have a Jack Russell. Just make sure you socialize the dog. My in law's dog is the only dog we have ever known that my dog does not get along with and is also the only dog that my dog has some fear of. In our situation, both dogs have a lot of alpha tendencies and they both do better with bigger dogs. Jack Russells are so cute!!!

Tips? Ummm... definitely remain consistent with your rules, buy bitter apple spray, crate train the puppy, have plenty of toys/rawhide so she's not chewing on your furniture, and definitely lots of exercise.

Oh and as far as housebreaking the dog, if she does have an accident that you see happening right in front of you, clap really loudly (it makes them stop peeing), pick her up and put her outside asap. Don't yell at her. Oh and use a key word (we use "go potty") as she goes pee or poop outside.

Before we fenced in our yard, we would bring Jedi to the tennis courts and throw the ball back and forth. He loved it!

I'm trying to think if there's anything else...

a few months, but he was never bad to begin with. Only a few accidents here or there. The hard part was we have carpet upstairs and wood floors down stairs. So it took him a while to learn he couldn't pee on the carpet upstairs. Chat Icon

Yes Jedi still goes in his crate during the night. He's almost a year and half old. We do occasionally let him sleep in our bed on the weekends, but not too much. We have a baby on the way, so i don't want there to be any resentment or for Jedi to get too used to it.

When we go out during the day or at night, we usually will gate him off in our bathroom downstairs. We have tile and a pedestal sink, so there's nothing he can destroy in there. Chat Icon Although we do have to take the toilet paper roll of otherwise he shreds it. Chat Icon

yeah same here- we have wood on the first floor and carpet upstairs too, but we won't be allowing her upstairs at all. I just hope this teething thing doesn't last forever! she is crazy biting and we have plenty of toys for her to chew on..

congrats on your pregnancy!!Chat Icon

Yes we learned our lesson and gated off the upstairs. He wasn't allowed upstairs until he was a year old and only after he just emptied his bladder. Chat Icon Especially since he also liked to eat the carpet too!

As for teething, make sure when she is playing with her toys, you praise her. Also anything she chews that is not her toy, spray with bitter apple spray. Also lots of dogs love kongs. Mine didn't so much, but when i filled it with peanut butter and froze it, he liked that. Oh and giving her ice cubes will be a huge hit!

Like i said, just make sure you're consistent in laying down the rules. Chat Icon

thanks so much Ali, this is such great info!! BTW I just gave her an icecube and she is going nuts with it -LOL
yes, we bought a puppy kong but she likes the real bone with the marrow in the middle much better.I have two little ones so I can't really spray the bitter apply on their toys that she takes from them Chat Icon

I just want to make a suggestion, in case you didn't think of this. Make sure the toilet seat is down. I would think a pup could jump and fall in the toilet and drown...forgive me if you have this covered. Just throwing it out there. Chat Icon
