To a beautiful little boy!! Jackson Christopher was born August 31, 2010 at 2:15 in the afternoon. I was brought in on the 30th for an induction after my doctor determined that my platelet count was getting too low. At 9 pm we went to Good Samaritan Hospital. The staff there was very nice and accomodating. I was given cervadil at around 10:30 and was told that I could have some contractions. Around 1 am I began having contractions that seemed to come every 3-2 minutes lasting about 1 minute in length. They were uncomfortable but nothing I couldn''t handle. At around 3 am they became increasingly painful, yet I still was not dilated at all. So at the urging of the nurse I received some demerol to take the edge off of the contractions. I continued to have the contractions but was able to nap here and there thanks to the demerol. At about 9 am my doctor came in and broke my water. It was such a weird sensation! I was planning on trying to hold off on getting the epidural for as long as I could but when my doctor asked if I wanted it now something told me to get it right then, when I was at 3 cm. Thank God I did! It took the anasthesiologist about 45 minutes to come in to do it and by then I was begging for the epi! I had told him (as well as my doctor) that I had a history of scoliosis and slipped discs and kept asking if this would be a problem. They all assured me that there would be no issue. I was so scared of the epi but really all I felt was the tiniest pinch from the numbing medicine. About two seconds later my entire lower half went completely numb. Good, they all said, it''s working. Then I felt like I couldn''t sit up on my own, which I came to realize I couldn''t when I slumped down in the bed. The anasthesiologist and nurse had to lift my legs onto the bed. I was completely numb from the chest down. THe anasthesiologist had put the epi in too far, essentially giving me a spinal, which is what they would normally give you if you were getting a c-section. I started to panic about not being able to feel anything, move my arms, even swallowing was getting difficult. I think I started having a panic attack because my blood pressure dropped and they had to give me oxygen. They immediately turned off the epi and I pretty much just had to wait it out till I could move again. Once the spinal wore off and I could move, they tried the epi again, this time with another anasthesiologist in tow. They tried two different times before they could get it in, all the while blaming the scoliosis that they had said wouldn''t be a problem. Finally the epi was in. Unfortunately it didn''t "take" everywhere. I couldn''t feel my stomach but my lower abdomen and hips especially the right side felt every contraction. I am sure the epi took some of the edge off the contractions I could feel, but it was still pretty uncomfortable. About an hour later my doctor checked me and told me I was at 5 cm and that I would probably not deliver for another few hours. About 20 minutes later I was calling the nurse in begging her to get the anasthesiologist to turn up the epi! I had so much pressure I could barely speak. My DH had gone down to the lobby to tell our families that it would still be awhile. My mom was with me and I kept telling her that there was something going on and that I felt like I had to push. My doctor checked me and I was fully dilated! 5 cm to 10cm in about 20 minutes! My mom called my DH and told him to get up here now because I told the doctor I could not wait for her to even put her gown on, I started pushing! Pushing was a weird experience. I kept thinking any minute the baby would come flying out because of how hard you actually have to push! The best advice I can give is to push during the contractions and to not stop until its gone. I wound up doing 3 sets of 10 counts of pushing during each contraction. About ten minutes into pushing and Jackson Christopher was born. We had been team all along so when the doctor said "It''s a Boy!" it was the most beautiful surprise I have ever had. Dh and my mom both cried a little and I just could not stop staring at this beautiful little boy! My doctor did have to cut me a bit in order for the baby''s shoulders to pass through but I didn''t even feel it. The stitching up was a bit uncomfortable as I felt it a few times, but nothing painful. Team Green girls - Not knowing was hard but finding out after going through labor and delivery was like the biggest prize ever! It was so exciting and I think it actually made me press on in order to finally find out what we were having!
