James Holmes sent massacre plans to school psychiatrist
People.com is reporting that James Holmes, the man who killed all those people in a Colorado movie theater, mailed his massacre plans to the psychiatrist at his school.
He mailed these plans before the attack.
The package never made it to the psychiatrist until after the attack.
Dear Lord, the "what ifs" that must be running through these people's minds at that school.... what if the package was delivered on time. What if the psychiatrist had opened it. Could he have been stopped? Could those people have been saved?
Ugh, makes this tragedy even more horrible.

Re: James Holmes sent massacre plans to school psychiatrist
I am sure more stories like this will come out about him, stuff like this generally always does.
Look at the guy who killed those kids at VA Tech a few years ago. One of them was a graduate of my HS.
As a social worker, who has worked with the mentally ill, I can tell you our system is not designed to help those who are severely disturbed.
I had a former client wind up in the media once for killing someone. I had been alone with them on more than one occasion, and the family had been at a loss of what to do with them for years because psychiatry couldn't help.
I also had a former client that I couldn't get help for jump to their death. We knew when we accepted the case it was just a matter of time.
It's also usually people like myself that are "blamed" for stuff like this, when it happens.
I also see the type of clients that are being let out of institutions, who should never be allowed back out.
I know that's not a good attitude for a social worker to have, but when you are spending hundreds of thousands in tax payer money a year to treat someone like this who can't be cured, it takes away from many, many people who can that can't come out of institutions because all of the resources are going to the cases that suck the life out of good workers.
I don't know what the answer is, but there needs to be places for the mentally insane, drug addicted, etc. and it's not the streets and general population.

WOW, I can't imagine dealing with stuff like that.
I don't know there is anyone to blame here, but clearly if he mailed his massacre plans to someone before he carried them out and the person received them, maybe, just maybe, something could have been done. Who knows, even if the psychiatrist had received the package, maybe it still would have happened. It's just really sad that the package was sitting in the mailroom for a week before he carried out the killings. I'm sure everyone will wonder what might have been if someone had seen them earlier.

There are, unfortunately, people who either are unable to survive or are just unsuited for life outside of an institutional setting. I can think of a few clients from my former job who probably fall under both categories.
As a society, we have an "all or nothing" approach where we either have to lock up everyone forever or work to integrate people into the community who maybe shouldn't be there. There has to be a point where we accept that we can't save everyone.
There's not guarantee that the shooting wouldn't have happened if that letter had been opened earlier. Even if we had the knowledge prior and were able to get to him, authorities could have had him thrown in for a three day stint in a psych ward where he could have been ruled to be fine and released only to proceed with his plan.
It's a truly sad situation, and for the survivors and victim's families, this revelation surely has got be like rubbing salt in an open wound.

without going into too much personal stuff...there is a law right now that allows for repeat sex offenders who are deemed unfit for society to be remanded to psych institutions for basically life. There is a judge, I think in the Bronx or Brooklyn that thinks its unconstitutional and wants to overturn it. If so, tons of very scary people will be out on the street. The person who I know that is in an institution is in danger of walking free if this guy wins.... I know it isn't the same as what you are talking about but, I get what you mean about the mentally ill needing a place for long term or permanent placement.. Sorry if this looks crazy.. iPad typing sucks.

Re: James Holmes sent massacre plans to school psychiatrist
That's very much what I am talking about too. There are just certain populations of people in our society, that are inappropriate for the services that ARE available out here in the community, yet, there are no other services available so they end up taking away from others AND putting others at risk ALL.THE.TIME if they are even involved in any kind of services.
Anyways, back to the OP though, I am super curious about what is going to come out about this guy and his history prior to this awful event.
I am sure this is also not going to be the last time we see something like this occur either.

James Holmes sent massacre plans to school psychiatrist
Maybe we need to start getting on our senators about providing long term inpatient living arrangements for "dangerous" individuals. It's just sickening to me that they're tossed back with the general population. How anyone could allow that is beyond my comprehension.

Re: James Holmes sent massacre plans to school psychiatrist
SMH! He clearly wanted to be caught. He surrendered no problem, was talking to the cops until his lawyer showed up, and now this. There is a reason behind him doing such an AWFUL thing and then wanting the attention or take the blame. I know he is mentally ill, that is for sure and his mom even confirmed that, but I would really love to know what the whole plan was going on in his head and why he wanted to get caught. I'm no pyschiatrist but I'd still like to know THE WHOLE TRUTH! Hopefully it will give the families some closure as well!
And then after the whole truth, let him rot!!!
