Nothing like making teen pregnancy look like fun!!
my thoughts exactly
what are they supposed to do, tie her up and shoot her??
shes 17 not 12, i dont think it is the end of the word. not the best position to be in, but i think it could be ALOT worse.
No, but they don't need to publish the super-fun baby shower in the magazines.
"Look kids, if you get knocked up at 17 you get to have parties and wear pretty dresses and your mom will smile and pose with you!!"

They are glorifying her being pregnant. What is this teaching young girls who saw her as a role model ?
I'm not saying hide her away in the attic and pretend she's not pregnant, but maybe keeping it more low key is more appropriate.
I'm sure these girls see a lot more in their own neighborhoods, news, school, myspace, etc. Than any magazine.
She certainly isn't the 1st 16 yr old to get pregnant. And she won't be the last.
I don't know. I just don't get the whole "role model" thing. I never taught my daughter that a character on TV was a role model. Instead they should be reminded their ACTORS, playing roles.

Unfortunately not all parents have those conversations.
Those are the kids who are most at risk and most susceptible.

Of course girls see things in their schools and neighborhoods. But IMO these cutesy pictures of a pregnant teen's baby shower that are published in a magazine IS glorifying the situation. And that isn't good, especially for the many young girls out there who do not have a strong positive parental influence. I've met so many teen girls who think having a baby is "fun" and "cute" and they go and register at BRU. they just don't get it and this sort of thing doesn't help.

ITA with this. Things like this only shows one side of pregnancy, not the reality of sleepless nights, the cost of raising a child, not being able to go out with friends, having to postpone educational opportities, etc. These type of displays are glamorizing it IMO

Should everyone have worn their sad faces to the shower?
She got PG at 17. It's not ideal, but it happened, and the damage is already done. But you know what? it's still a new life, and there IS reason to celebrate that.

That's where PARENTING comes in- and not letting OK magazine set your child's moral foundation.
I watched 90210 when i was in junior high. they were all having sex. That certainly didn't make me run out and 'get some of my own' because i saw some TV stars that i wanted to be like do it on TV. I can understand how teenagers are impressionable and very "follow the crowd", but to say that just b/c some B-lister has happy pics from her baby shower that all these teenage girls are going to get knocked up, is a stretch, imo.

I didn't say that girls are going to get pregnant just because they see Jamie Lynn in a magazine, but some of them may not really know about the realities of parenting. They know what they see. You made the choice to not follow what you saw on TV because you realized there were consequences to sex at a young age, but some of these girls don't.

I didn't mean to direct that at you or just what you wrote- but more for all of those who subscribe to the idea that teenage pregnancy happens because young hollywood is doing it- it happens because of a lack of education, proper teaching, and mistakes.

I agree with you that it happens because of lack of education, good sex ed programs and making mistakes. But I also think that you can not discount the effect of cultural attitudes and the way the media sensationalizes and gives attention to these famous unwed/teen mothers. That is not to say that all teen girls are going to go get pg because of Jamie Lynn Spears, but this baby shower was on the cover of whatever magazine that I saw in the supermarket check out line today. Young girls see Jamie Lynn all dressed up and getting all of this attention, and those girls are certainly getting a message!

I'm not saying that the family coming together and celebrating it is wrong.
Of course you should celebrate a life coming into the world and make the best out of every situation.
But I am saying selling these photo ops to the media and having it all look like hugs and puppies is wrong.
She is a role model - she should have more discretion.

I agree. You know they were probably sold, which to me, the baby shower of a girl who got pregnant at 16 and has a show on a television channel for KIDS, is just not appropriate. I understand that they are looking at the bright side, but at the same time, they need to show discretion.
