Jealousy over petty things?

Do you ever get jealous of someone you know over stupid things? Like for example, they are more organized then you are, their house is better decorated, they're good party hosts, etc.? We have this friend, and I can't help it, but I'm constantly jealous over silly things like that.

YES!!!!!!!!! I hate saying it, but yes, I'm jealous! Esp. with people who can afford these beautiful homes that are everything I dream, but they are $300K more than I can afford.

um totally. you know this about me, though. Chat Icon

its soo normal. an it stinks to have that feeling. however, you must use their example as inspiration. if you are not organized try to be more organized and folow her good example. if you dont do good parties try to figure out what makes hers good, etc.

Re: Jealousy over petty things?

OOOH definitely!!! i have two friends that i'm super jealous of! one has super wealthy parents- not only did they pay for her $45 K wedding, BUT they also gave her enough money to pay for over half of a great $520 K house!
another friend went through school and got 3 degrees, but got married and doesn't have to work. she basically met her DH, and said " i'd rather have a marriage and family than work" (like you acn't have both?!?) so, now she doesn't have to work AND they are having a brand new house built...
LOL jealousy is definitely one of my issues!

Thank God no. I have enough issues. I think envy and jealousy are one of the worst traits that humans can have. I worked very hard at myself (I've been called the Dalai Lama Chat Icon Chat Icon ) to avoid feeling this toward anyone. I have no ill will, thankfully!! Chat Icon

I do think it's normal though, but it's not a good "personal" trait to have.

Same here!!! My parents instiiled in me at young age never envy or get jealous of anyone for what they have and this is a very valuable lesson I intend to pass on to my children.

Re: Jealousy over petty things?

I do get jealous, but I dont think over petty things. I don't have time for pettiness.

I should ask my DH this question about me though b/c he'd honestly tell him if he thought I got jealous over petty things.

I'm envious of people my age who have nice homes and have started having kids already. I just keep telling myself that good things come to those who wait.

Re: Jealousy over petty things?

I can say now.. no I don't anymore... I used to, and I was driving myself crazy... but like the poster said above... there will always be someone that has more than me or be in a different place in their life than me... and i just don't care.. I love where I am at, and what I have and who I am.... and wouldn't trade it for anything Chat Icon

Re: Jealousy over petty things?

I had this poster in college and still remember certain lines from it today.

Here is an excerpt of this poem:

Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

This was part of a poem by Max Ehrmann, "Desiderata"

I have, sure. DH always says: Jealousy is a pathetic emotion; don't fall prey to it.

But sure i have.

That is great, thanks for sharing it. It would be great not to have these emotions - they do make you bitter, but its so hard to free yourself of it.

Re: Jealousy over petty things?

I try not to be, because like Beth said, there will always be someone richer, prettier, smarter...

I've learned that people may have material things or abilities that I do not have, but at the same time they probably have a problem or some kind of negative that I don't want. The grass is never really greener IMO.

Re: Jealousy over petty things?

Its natural to sometimes feel jealousy-but for me its fleeting-

I may not own a home right now. I may not be at the weight i was before my baby...I may not be anything close to wealthy and I may not always be able to join the girls for happy hour..

BUT...I have my health, a wonderful husband who works very hard for us, a beautiful new son and many other things to be thankful for.

When you see a friend go through an awful disease it puts a lot in perspective so i try not to ever dwell on jealousy.

I don't get jealous because I am thankful for who I am. Trying to be someone else would just be boring.

my thoughts exactly....i feel jealously is a wasted emotion.
However I can be shopping by myself at the mall, and see a young girl w/her mom shopping and think "why can't that be me"that kind of jealousy i think is understandable.
