Have you tried on Zara jeans. I love them all. They have different fit and you can find some for $40. Also Top Shop has really nice jeans that fit well. A bit more pricey but worth it.
Where do you buy Zara?
There is a giant Zara across from my office, right by Fulton Street in Manhattan
There's one in the Walt Whitman Mall in Huntington

I could never find any jeans that I liked. Until I bought these at American Eagle. I bought them in long and they were perfect! I wound up ordering two more pair in different colors. They are very reasonably priced and SO soft!

OK I think I might have found the holy grail.
Gap Mid rise Curvy true skinny
They fit my butt and thighs, don't flatten my ass and dont' slip down and give plumber's crack.
This might be the one !
I think the curvy fit is what makes the difference- I'm larger in the thighs and hips than the waist and always struggle with skinny jeans being too tight in the thighs and flattening the heck out of my ass!

you went to the store? i need to find time to actually GO to the store to try them on - becuase jean shopping online can get annoying... try on... return... try on... return...

I know. I started this thread because I knew I needed to go to a store and try on.
But laziness won out again and I saw an ad for these online and just took a shot. I didn't have high hopes and when the package came I was like- I bet I will have to return these.
But I got lucky!
I need a tall length so sometimes it hard to find my size in stores too
