Jelly Beans at 20 months old?

Am I overreacting? I went to pick up DS from my mom last night and she was giving him jelly beans.

I yelled at her. She also used to give him whole grapes when just turned 1 and I yelled at her then.

her response was "he can chew. he takes much bigger bites of pizza than the size of a jelly bean" Chat Icon

DH freaked out too and now wants me to have "a talk" to my mom about choking hazards. which I thought I did but she just doesn't get it.

Oh man, I can KIND OF see what she meant by the size... but there are 2 different kinds of choking hazards. The food that is too big, and the food that is too small. The jelly beans, I think, would fall into the too small category. I will say I have given DD grapes, BUT they were cut in 1/4 size and the skin was removed. Try explaining it to her again. Too big because they dont chew it enough, too small because sometimes they dont chew it at all. Sadly, if she still doesn't get it, you may need to limit your DC's food to only things you prepare.

ETA: She may not have thought about it because those Gerber fruit snacks are about the same size. Maybe you can suggest those instead if she wants to give him a treat. The coating on the jelly beans *may* be an issue for some kids.

All kids are different...I gave Lily whole hot dogs and grapes pretty early on, but she was a methodical chewer, so I knew she'd be ok.
However, your kid - your rules! Instead of "yelling" at your mom though, I'd suggest asking her not to do it. No one likes to be yelled at.

No way - my MIL wanted to give DS caramel at 15 months Chat Icon Um, hello, *I* can barely chew caramel! And my DS has all his teeth, that's not even the issue. It's so sticky and IMO a big choking hazard. Same with jelly beans.

You're right. I should not have yelled at her.

But I did take her aside when she did the grape thing the first time and explained to her that I wasn't comfortable with it and that she cut the grapes into pieces.

Then 2 weeks later, I caught her giving him whole grapes again. So at that point I yelled. It's my son's safety in her hands and something that I really freak out about.

So when I have had this discussion on choking hazards with her on numerous occassions and she still does it, my automatic reaction is to yell.

I honestly don't know how else to deal with her if she keeps thinking what she is doing is ok bc she did it with my other nieces and nephews and they are all fine.

I see nothing wrong with jelly beans at that age. THey are super tiny and really mushy.

Grapes, Yes, those should be cut up.

I've never had mushy jelly beans! They always have to be chewed really well, and I am an adult.

Re: Jelly Beans at 20 months old?

I would be upset too. Does he have his molars? My 17 month doesn't have her molars yet so most likely she would be swallowing the jellybeans which can be a choking hazard IMO. My mom takes care of my DD too so I know the fine line we have to walk when it comes to telling them what to do with our kids. I would pull out the old "The doctor said not to give them jellybeans until they are X years old" cardChat Icon
