Job advice needed - UPDATED below
I interviewed a few months ago for another HR Generalist spot. This was for a job in NJ, 20 min from my house. They wanted me to come back for a 2nd interview and I couldnt come at the time they wanted, but I tried to be flexible and suggest a few other times. (I had something at work I could not change or miss). So, they never called me again and I was like - good riddance I don't want to work for someone who is not flexible.
Well, now - I work in the city and live in NJ and I've wanted to work closer to home for a while now. Drive to work and all. But we are actively TTC and have now even begun the infertility treatment route since we've been trying so long. Well, the lady called me out of the blue today - she wants to talk to me again. I am tempted to call her but I have been at my current job for almost 5 years, have great benefits and when I do get pg, i will have a lot of flexibility etc. I will prob even be able to work from home a day or 2 a week.
So, I'm torn. Do I call her and go on another interview? Or do I stay where I am? DH and I are serious about TTC.
I called her and got her voice mail. We keep missing each other. I am going to see if I can go in for an interview this week. I was thinking that when we do have a child, I'd rather be a drive away to drop them off / pick up, rather than having to rely on NJ Transit and my DH's schedule is wacky with the 2 jobs. It must be a sign that she called me again, months later right?

Honestly, I think being closer to home when you have a child is most important. I understand what you are saying about flexibility and stuff, but you dont know that this company also won't be felxible. You can always find out and maybe that will make the decision easier. Tough decision though

Re: Job advice needed
I'm kind of in the same position. I've been being "courted" by a local company for a pretty good job, but with the TTC process I have to stay where I am right now - great benefits, a lot of leave time and lots of vacation.
It just doesn't make sense for me personally to move to a job where I would be starting from scratch with all of that, especially with the TTC process being what it is for me. Plus they aren't offering me enough salary-wise to really make it worth my while.
But, if I were in your position I would keep pursuing the other one to see what they would offer you. Worst comes to worst, you turn them down and stay where you are. But maybe they will offer you an amazing package.
Good luck with your decision, I hope it all works out for you!!

Yeah that's what I mean...I'd be starting from scratch, totally. If this was a year ago...yeah. I'd do it. But now....I don't know.

Re: Job advice needed
It can't hurt you to go and hear what the other company has to offer. They may have woman that work from home a day or two. I say go on the interview...see what they have to say. If it sounds as if they will give you no flexibility then stay with your company (unless the commute is really getting to you)

Re: Job advice needed
I would go on the interview - just because you interview doesn't mean you have to take it. All of this may be a bit premature since you don't know what their benefits, etc may be and it might be better than your current job when coupled with the fact that you'll be working 20 min from home. It can't hurt - worst case scenario, you're left in the same position you're in now.

Re: Job advice needed
Jen - I agree with Lauren about pursuing it then make a decision.
I can tell you that TTC and the route is tough time-consuming and there are going to be days that you just have to do something TTC related or you're out for that month. There are many days of b/w, sonos, tests, etc and you will need that flexibility, and it sounds like you have that now.
I started a new job in April and got into the TTC in June, I've had to miss time off work and it's not easy since I haven't told my boss, he just knows I'm dealing with a medical issue.
I only use vacation time for TTC stuff
Good luck!

I'll give her a call...it's the change and uncertainty I am afraid of....I guess. I've been at my current job for a long time.

Re: Job advice needed
I think you should see what they're offering you. I work in the city (weren't we supposed ot have lunch?) but have a lot of flexibility in my job.
If someone wanted me to interview on LI, I would see what the position was, benefits etc. but the TTC definitely makes changing jobs more difficult, also the PG thing does. I hired someone for that admin job - if she told me tomorrow that she was TTC, I'd give her the time off she needed & work with her on it. I'm not sure other places are that flexible.

yes we were!
Yeah - I know this lady has kids but I don't know how flexible she is. I have been taking days here and there lately for my Dr appts so I don't even know how I could go in for the interview - call in sick I guess?
I guess I'd have to think about what I really want - a baby - or to be close to home.

Re: Job advice needed
It's a hard decision! I just started a new job and will be TTC soon- I'm nervous about getting time off if we have TTC issues. I changed jobs though because I was MISERABLE and now I have a shorter commute.
I would definitely see what they have to offer- it can't hurt. Before you call sit down with DH and decided what they would have to offer you before you would consider leaving- like for 10k more is it worth it, etc- like a pros and cons list.
It's nerve wracking but it shows how super you are to have all these choices!
