Job/Life question...What do you think about it?

Ok - here is goes...

I have a great job, that I make great money and I work 5 minutes from my house. My bosses are wonderful. I have been here 6 years. I get enough vacation time. So all those aspects I am happy about.

Ever since the start of the new year, I am a little (actually very) burned out from my job. There is one girl that I work with that will be going out on maternity leave and my bosses keep giving me different aspects of her job to do. I don't really enjoy her job at all. But I know the stuff needs to get done so I have been doing it.

In any event, I am starting to DREAD working. I am not 100% sure why. My schedule I think is a huge factor. I work 8:30-5:30 and 10-7 every other day. So there are weeks that I am at work until 7pm 3 nights. I am up early everyday, so it's not like I am sleeping until 9am and coming to work. These late nights with my job, coupled with the fact that I am starting not to like my job as much, makes me wonder what is more important in life? Is it making lots of $ - or is it being happy? Right now, I am not happy. But my DH keeps pounding into my head - "well, you don't commute that far, and you make a great salary"....yeah I do, but if I am not as happy, is it worth it? And I have to say that the working until 7pm is really really really getting to me. On those days, it's like my entire personality changes...I get viscious and mean....and it's soooo not me.

So I am wondering - do I need a change of scenery? Would this make me happier? I just don't know. But I feel like I am living to work and not working to live....if anyone understands my babble...let me know your thoughts?

Thanks.Chat Icon

Chat Icon Chat Icon i hear ya! and it sounds like not much fun. it sounds like your bosses might be taking advantage of you in giving you aspects of another persons job to do. i think you need to talk to them about how its makign you feel overwhelmed.
also, does your schedule HAVE to be the way it is with alternating late nights?? it sounds like if you were able to change that somehow, it might make a huge difference to you. even if you only had one late night a week instead of up to 3.... because all that alternating can really take a toll on your body, because its not on a set "clock"...

Unfortunately, the schedule won't change. Everyone alternates with each other. So I alternate with the girl who will be going out on maternity leave. Honestly, you are right - if I could work 8:30-5:30 everyday, I would be sooo happy. The schedule is the main reason I am unhappy, I think.

I agree they are taking advantage. That's what DH says and that I need to talk to them. But I am not sure how it will be received by them.

I have gone thru a similar dilemma for quite some time now. My hours arent that bad and my quality or life is good & I get paid great money. But the fact of the matter is I am miserable for one reason or another. I stuck it out for as long as I could, but I will be quitting in May and taking some time off. Life is too short to go to a job that you are miserable at day in and day out just for the money.

I would start looking for other opportunities, it sounds like it's time for a change....

I think you need to sit down with your bosses and let them know how you are feeling. Remember what happened last time you were going to make a change? I think that you have a good enough relationship with them that you can express these feelings.

Or, why not take a break???? It's your turn anyway.Chat Icon

HAHA well the only problem is that if I DO decide to stick it out and stay here- I think it would benefit me for the moment to keep my mouth shut and go in form the kill when they are more desperate - like when this girl goes out on early leave or something. I don't know...I am very confused.

Just be cautious...the grass is not always greener on the other side. I've made that mistake more than once.

If you have a specific problem with the job - try and work it out before leaving. If they won't budge, then you know it is time to look elsewhere. And money means nothing if you are not happy.

I agree completely. Small things like working close to home and salary are actually important factors to take into consideration. I think an honest and open forum w/your bosses is worth it right now - let them know that you're unhappy with the new responsibility.

I think they already know that they need you and would be willing to work with you. What ever happened to the assistant to help out and cover nights? I wouldn't wait until you are at the end of your rope, I would speak to them now. At least you will get it off your chest.

They are looking to hire two assistants now...one to relieve that girl who is pregnant, and a second - which might help with my hours----but they have had ads in the paper and really no luck finding someone.

If your bosses are wonderful, I think they will understand your needs.

Maybe tell them about how the things that have been added to your job and your extended hours are starting to make you feel unhappy. And see what they can help you with.

Re: Job/Life question...What do you think about it?

what are your options for other places in your field? will it mean commuting to the city? for me i hated commuting...taking the train i was gone 12 hours a day, and if i missed the train by 5 mins it was another hour til the next train. 10-7 kind of stinks, but if another job means being out of the house 8-8 that is even worse.

i'd say start looking at other options. i would love to make a lot and work that close to home. want to trade? Chat Icon

Don't get me wrong - I know I have it great. And I am not complaining....which is why I think I haven't talked to my bosses, because I don't like to come off as a complainer.

I am just expereincing major work burn out. I don't know if it is the hours - the industry - not sure. But I NEVER felt like this and all of a sudden it has hit me hard and I am not sure what I should do about it.

There is nothing worse that just DREADING getting out of bed....and again, I know I have it good - so I just need to figure out the root of my problem and fix it.

Do you think it could be something other than work? I haven't been able to get out of bed the past few weeks, and have been about 1/2 hour late to work every day, and I even like my job. I feel like this season is just so depressing...Leaving in the summer at 7 you still have daylight and a night in front of you...Now it probably feels like all you want to do is go home to bed.

Re: Job/Life question...What do you think about it?

ifeel the same way. SAME and i am in pretty much the same situation.

i think you need to discusss this with your bosses. you are obviously valuable to them so they should want to ensure your happiness. maybe you can work out another perk

in the meantime it doesnt hurt to "see whats out there"

thats what ive bee doing...then as soon as i go on an interview i realize that i have it pretty good at my job..

i go through this cycle often, i think i need to be reminede again b.c im starting to dread my days here too

good luck!
