Job question...need help

I was offered a job today making about $20,000 more than I currently do. I need someone to help me figure out if it would be worth it to change...

My current job offers me a child credit of $300 per month towards Amber's daycare. That may change once we "move locations".

The benefits are also much more. I can estimate about another $200 a month in additional coverage costs. I don't know how good their plan is (I will ask) and what services it covers.

Also, the vacation time starts at 2 weeks after the 1st year, whereas now I have 3 weeks vac, 2 weeks personal and unlimited sick time/flexible time/can work from home.

As much as the $$$ sounds tempting, I don't have a good feeling about it.

What should I do??Chat Icon

Re: Job question...need help

to me your current job sounds better.
you are making an extra 500 a month off the bat which is 6k per year.

After the taxes, 20k is really only about 12k which is 1k more per month

However, the fact that you have flexible days and can work from home whenever, is worth the 1k a month.

Unless you are in good need of the estimated 'extra' money per month.

*** if you do decide to take the job, tell them your current vacation situation, and make sure they will carry that forward for you..

Good luck!

Re: Job question...need help

$20K more a year would equate to about $1100 more a month take home. it definitely sounds like a lot of extra $ to me. more than makes up for the $500 extra a month you get at your current job. is there anything else to consider like commute, opportunity for advancement, etc?

While the extra money would be nice, I think that with all that's going on right now you have a good thing with lots of time off and the ability to work from home.

Is it possible to negotiate the terms or your paid time off and flexible working situation?

I'd stay put. Seems that your current job has more to offer benefits wise etc.

I agree.

I would go with ou rgut feeling. If you don't havfe a good feeling about this then i would not do it. Your current job sounds good to me. If you like it and are comfortable, even though they are offering you more at the other place, I would still stay put.

ITA, especially now that you are a single parent the flexibility is probably a great thing to have now since it's just you.

Re: Job question...need help

I'd take it! Can you talk with the new job about getting more vacation/sick time?

ITA. Although you have to factor the benefits in, 20K is 20K and in a few years you will be making more, maybe another 20K. The only other question I would have is will this job make you more or less marketable in the future.

Re: Job question...need help

can you use the job offer to try and get a raise at your current job? Can you see if they'll match it.

a friend of mine was just offered a job for exactly that amt more than he was currently making - 20k. He wanted to stay where he was for a variety of reasons. so - he used it to get a raise. they ended up matching it!

For me the flexibility is priceless. That means I don't have to rely on someone else for emergency child care.

I think what I would do is speak to my current job to see if they can give me a market adjustment. Obsiously, the market is paying more than what they're paying you so it should be a no-brainer.
