ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Rising star pitcher Joba Chamberlain issued an apology to the Yankees and their fans yesterday after his DUI arrest the day before.
"I want to apologize to the New York Yankees and the fans for an error in judgment and for putting myself in a difficult situation. I intend to properly resolve this situation, and do not intend to be in such a situation again. My goal is to focus on pitching for the Yankees in the 2009 season," he said in a statement released by his agent, Randy Hendricks.
Chamberlain, 23, was arrested early Saturday near his hometown of Lincoln, Neb., for allegedly driving while under the influence. He also was charged with speeding and having an open container of alcohol in his vehicle.
A Nebraska state patrolman pulled over Chamberlain for speeding on U.S. 77, according to spokeswoman Deborah Collins. The officer noticed an odor of alcohol in the 2006 BMW 750I, according to Collins, and saw an open container of alcohol.
Chamberlain was taken to Cornhusker Place Detox, a spot in Lincoln where allegedly drunken drivers are taken, and released yesterday. Collins told The Associated Press she didn't know Chamberlain's blood-alcohol level.
According to Nebraska law, if convicted a first time of driving under the influence (a misdemeanor), there is a mandatory minimum of 7 days in jail, a 6-month license revocation and a $400 fine. One also can be sentenced to probation, which bears a minimum of a 60-day license revocation and a $400 fine. The maximum penalty is 60 days in jail, a 6-month license revocation and a $500 fine.
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman did not return phone calls or e-mail requests for comment. Yankees co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner told the New York Daily News that the team would support Chamberlain. "If he needs help, we'll certainly give it to him," Steinbrenner said.
"Everybody deserves a second chance - or even a third chance," he added. "He's 23 years old. He's just very lucky that nothing more serious happened. We're talking about a really good kid here, and that's what counts."
Collins told the AP the county attorney is likely to file formal charges today.
Since making his major-league debut in August 2007, Chamberlain has rapidly become one of the Yankees' most popular players. He has had tremendous success on the field, and his exuberant personality draws fans. The "Joba Rules" T-shirts that refer to the strict limits the Yankees placed on how often he could pitch have been a big hit.
The Yankees are counting on Chamberlain to be in the starting rotation in 2009. Before, the only obstacle was potential injuries; he missed time in August with rotator cuff tendinitis.

I swear....these kids can be SO stupid. Plus, he's a father for god's sake!!

Had no idea!
I was shocked too when I found out- on Father's Day, they did a whole thing on the pre-game show and he of course talked about his dad and mentioned his son. Somehow I doubt he's married too. He's so young!
