John Feeney of Flower Michele

In sorrow:

About John
John Patrick Feeney (8/18/1966-10/19/2010)

John Feeney passed away early Tuesday morning. He had a heart attack while playing basketball with his friends at a recreation complex near his home in Coram, NY.

John gave his life to his family. His daughter Hope and wife Lauren were the most important people to him. He constantly gave of himself so that he could do his best to provide for them in every manner of the word. His work ethic was second to none. As owner and manager of Flower Michele, a wedding-only floral operation, John made the world a brighter place for each and every bride he came into contact with. John was a caring son to Joanne and Thomas Feeney, and his relationship with his parents flourished until his passing. John was a wonderful and loving brother to Kelly, Tom Jr., and Sean.

John was an incredibly passionate individual, and his mere presence exuded joy from those he was surrounded by. He had a way of saying just the right phrase at the perfect time to allow everyone around him to be comfortable. His main passion outside of his family was his business. John was known as one of the most respected and renowned floral designers in New York. He was recently featured in a Newsday publication for his creative work in his industry. He brought his passion and brilliance to thousands of brides and their families throughout his career. The testimonials to this fact are endless, and he truly brought himself into the families of the brides and grooms for whom he created his masterpieces. John and his work created a joy that few people can measure up to.

John did not immediately find his passion. After high school, John enlisted in the Marine Corps where he spent several months in boot camp before being honorably released for medical reasons. John served his community as a volunteer fireman in Oyster Bay, NY for a period and then went on to begin a career with another love of his, cars. John was an avid NASCAR fan. He owned, worked on, and restored several cars beginning in his mid-teens. John started as a mechanic for Midas Mufflers and quickly rose to managerial heights. It was only when he was diagnosed with a serious medical condition that he left that field, ultimately to do what he was meant to in life.

At 28, John was diagnosed with Dilated Cardio Myopathy, a medical condition that affects the amount of blood that flows through the body via an enlarged heart. At that time, John was on a heart transplant list at all major NY hospitals, and he was given a sobering diagnosis. The doctors told him to prepare to live for three more years if a transplant was unavailable. John was totally unwilling to allow himself to be relegated to that timeframe, and over the years, John amazed the doctors as his condition continuously improved rather than deteriorated over time. In fact, it is, and will remain undetermined that this condition had anything to do with his death. If you asked him, he’d say, “Not a chance.”

John’s family, friends, employees, and acquaintances will all miss him dearly. The world turned a shade darker when he passed. In loving memory of a great man, rest in peace.

I'm so sad to read about this. You could tell how passionate he was about his work from the minute you walked into his store. His poor family Chat Icon

Re: John Feeney of Flower Michele

Very few people enjoy the impeccable type of reputation that John had. It always struck me that the brides loved him yet he did not need to come to the boards to boast about his work. The work spoke for itself. I didn't know him but I enjoyed looking at his work. He was a true artist. I am glad that so many brides that I knew had the opportunity to fulfill their dreams through John. If I did not have a florist that I knew and felt obligated to use, I would have selected either John or Lynn from Florisan.
