Joining 2 gyms, dumb?

Hey girls, so we belong to Bally's and have a pretty cheap membership - it is $20/month each for me and DH. I honestly hate our gym though- it is so crowded and a bit dirty. Not to mention a pain to get it - it's not far, like 10-12 minutes to go 4 miles and on crowded roads. Ugh. I am not willing to give this gym up though...because we like the weights and cardio, plus its cheap. We get what we pay for but there is not many other options where we live.

Anyway, we did a groupon at a boxing gym with a heavy bag and stuff and it is a great great class. We went 10x and really liked it and it is 1/2 mile from my house! We are thinking of joining but still keep Bally's. However the boxing gym is $50/month each. Hmmmmm, seems pretty pricey right? We would go at least 1x a week, maybe 2x a week, depends. The reason I like it is bc the workouts and teachers are different and always change things up - and it is guaranteed 1 hour of intense cardio, etc and we do a lot of abs at the end.

My only worry is that we have to do a 1 year membership to get a good rate but I am scared I may get sick of it after 6 months! I also run at least 1-2x a week and feel I may be signing up for too much. But at the same time I just love this class!!!!!!! UGH!

Talk to the other gym you want to join. See if they can do anything about the price. I know at my gym they work off of commission, so they're pretty willing to work with you in order to make a sale. Maybe you can have it written into your contract that you can stop your membership after 6 months?

Jenna my gym in Wantagh, Long Island is $68 a month yes pricey but you know what I use it and I love it! It is clean and offers a lot more than most gyms in the area not to mention the convenience. To me if you are going to use Bally's and use the Kickboxing place and you can offord it then do it! If you feel like you will not use it enough then I wouldn't. To me when it comes to working out I don't mind paying as long as I don't throw my money out the door by not utilizing it!

Jenna you're crazy!!!

Just kidding lol

It does sound a little pricey if you're only going once a week. I would see if they could work out some sort of deal with you. I agree that they're usually willing to compromise to make a sale.

Re: Joining 2 gyms, dumb?

We tried to bargain with them once so far - they said they could give us the x-mas special which was pay for 12 months, get 2 free. Hmm not interested in that really. DH wants to email the guy and ask again for something better...they seem willing to work with us and a bit flexible. The place seems a bit dead and I think that is why they ran the Groupon special so yes maybe we can make a deal?

As of now, if we go 5x a month like I think we will - it works out to $10/class. If we only make it 4x a month, then the cost would be about $12/class, not terrible. That is much better than paying per class, which is $20! That is where we are rationalizing.

I think you should do it! Most of the women at my hot yoga studio also belong to a gym (myself, included) and that's like the same thing!

When you put it like that, I completely think it's worth it! $10 a class is pretty standard and although I belong to a gym, I sometimes take classes outside of my gym that run $8 a class but I like switching things up so it's worth it to me!

Re: Joining 2 gyms, dumb?

That sounds cheap to me!!!

My hot yoga membership is $145.00 a month. If it is something you love, the cost will be motivation alone to keep up with it.
