Joining a Gym
DH and I have decided that we need to join a gym to get our butts in gear. BUT....I know nothing about what to look for when joining a gym, so I'm looking for some advice, tips, anything!
We also don't want to spend a ridiculous amount of money.....but I also want any money we are spending to be worth it.... Any suggestions for good gyms to join? We're currently in the Northport area.
Thanks!

Re: Joining a Gym
I dont know the area too well but I know Synergy has become a big chain and all over the island and a good gym for a decent price. I happen to go to LaFitness in farmingdale and I think they are pricey but DH gets a discount for being a PO ( a special they ran)

Re: Joining a Gym
How much is the normal amount to spend for a gym? I thought Synergy was a tad bit expensive....

Re: Joining a Gym
Syngrey is cheap compared to these new places- I pay $67 at NYSC
Jakes Friend owns a few syngery's- The Levittown one and the farmingdale one
and maybe one more- I can't remember his name now

Re: Joining a Gym
After DH and I moved, I had to find another gym. I have to be honest that I joined Synergy on a month to month basis after moving and I absolutely hated that gym. I left and went to Gold's gym. IMO, Gold's is a much better gym than Synergy. I did not like the equipment at Synergy and there were all 14 and 15 year olds just sitting on the equipment and not actually using any of them!!!

Re: Joining a Gym
In my opinion, I think spending the extra money at a gym that you feel comfortable going to and that have well maintained machines and good facilities is worth it.
I joined a gym that was closer to my house after we moved, I ended going back to my old gym which is further away, but I like the environment so much better. It's worth it for me.

Re: Joining a Gym
I think it depends where you join. Of all the gyms Ive been a member of Lucille Roberts was the cheapest.
The local gyms are usually smaller and less expensive.
Right now I go to La Fitness, which is huge and yearly its $600 which is alot since most others are about $360.
But I think if you're going to really use your membership its worth whatever the cost is.

Re: Joining a Gym
When we went to Synergy, it was a $99 sign up fee and $55 a month. So that would be $759 a year...which seems like a lot to me - especially since I've never been one to work out, so I don't even know if I would be able to figure out the machines there.
The other alternative I was thinking of was Lucille Roberts. Can anyone give me specific reasons there didn't like it there?

Someone had asked about the LR in Westbury on this thread so Im copying and pasting my answer below, not sure which location you are considering so this may not apply to your location.
I went there a few years ago. The classes were good esp step and cardio kickboxing. If you go at busy times (like 5pm-7pm) theres always a wait for treadmills and a sign up sheet which was annoying and when I was a member they werent open late enough on weekends.
Their rates are much less compared to other gyms though.

My major problem is that I've never been one to work out AT ALL! So I'm having a hard time committing to $700 a year when i don't know if I'll like the gym at all. I'd hate to spend the money and then find out that I don't like it, or that I use a small percentage of the machines. I was thinking Lucille Roberts might be better for me....but I haven't heard great things about it there....so I'm curious about the experiences...and seeing what people didn't like about it, so I can try to figure out if those are things that would bother me. I'm guessing my best bet is to go with a gym that has a lot of classes, as I have no idea what I'm doing in a gym and would need a TON of guidance. I can get there earlier in the afternoon because I'm a teacher and school gets out earlier than most jobs, so that doesn't worry me too much.
Am I making any sense? I feel like I've already made my decision....but I'm scared to make a committment to a gym!

That would be perfect if I could find a gym that would let me do that.
I need recommendations!

I live in Fort Salonga right now. Part of the problem is that we're here temporarily while we look for a house, so I'm not sure where we'll be buying our house and I'd hate to be stuck at a gym that's far away.
They have a location in Kings Park though - which would work for me! Are they expensive?

I was a member of Lucille for over 5 years. But if you say you are the type of person to rarely work out, I think Lucille Roberts may be the perfect gym to start out at. The reasons I did not like the gym was b/c it was overly crowded, and I had to always wait for a treadmill or elliptical. There isnt as much equipment so if the gym is crowded, you will wait. There is also a sign up sheet--1/2 hour per cardio machine. That is it. Their equipment is also very old...some they had updated, but some seriously needed to be thrown away and replaced already.
I liked the gym b/c it was what I was used to, I was close to home and it was all women (for the exception of one or two men). And most of all when I subscribed for a 2-year membership which came to $300, it was technically $11/month. That was Cheap!
Then my membership expired and I knew I didnt want to re-join, I was just sick and tired of complaining and not looking forward to going, that I knew I needed a change. I was skeptical but I did it and am happy I did.
I went to the one in Massapequa, by the way.......and sorry for such the long book here.

My friend went to the Kings Park location, she liked it alot, but stop going because she had a ababy and her life get hectic. She is hoping to go back this summer.
Phil and I pay I think either $96 or $99 for the both us monthly. It's in the $90, but not over $$100.
